German to English: British Elections (Frankfurter Allgemeine, 30.04.2015) General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Government / Politics
Translation - English Jaywick is the village of the stranded - only that the shipwrecked are not washed ashore from the North Sea, but from landward. The small community on the sea with its 4,800 people is, according to official statistics, the poorest in the whole of England. Over 60 per cent of the working age population receive unemployment or other welfare benefits. Every second adult has no vocational qualifications.
Founded in the nineteen-thirties of the past century as a seaside resort for working class families, the village chiefly consists of spartan single-story bungalows. Over the decades, they have degenerated into slums. The inhabitants are not holidaymakers, but live here permanently. "Beirut" they call their dreary beach village sarcastically.
It is not only the circumstances that are extreme in Jaywick, in 2014 the local MP for the constituency of Clacton defected from the ruling Conservative Party to the UK Independence Party (UKIP) - the political movement whose leader Nigel Farage recently complained that six out of ten HIV patients in Great Britain were foreigners. In Jaywick and surroundings meanwhile 60 per cent of constituents vote UKIP.
It is as if the stranded had been waiting all these years for there finally to be an alternative to the ever-unchanging political duopoly in their country. The Tories and the, sometimes more sometimes less, left-wing Labour Party have been taking turns ruling the country for a century with the strict first-past-the-post-system giving them a quasi-power monopoly.
