English to Italian: When and Why Are Emotions Disturbed? Suggestions Based on Theory and Data From Emotion Research Detailed field: Psychology
Source text - English Here is a provocative question: Would you let someone diagnose
and repair a motor problem in your car if they had little
knowledge about how different motors function normally?
Chances are that you would be quite reluctant.
What about emotion disorders? Shouldn’t we know how
emotions function normally before we attempt to diagnose
and repair them? It is a provocative question but central to the
topic of this special section—the distinction between normal
and abnormal or disturbed emotions. In this contribution I
will argue that thorough knowledge and agreement about the
nature and functions of emotion and empirical data on their
manifestations are essential for any attempt to deal with this
burning issue confronting psychiatry and clinical psychology.
While this article has been motivated by the ongoing debate
about the fifth revision of the DSM, no attempts will be made
to cover the literature on the underlying issues given the
extensive discussion of the debate in other articles in this special
section. Rather, using a concrete model of normal emotion
and some illustrative empirical results, an attempt will be
made to develop some concrete criteria to diagnose inappropriate,
disturbed, or maladaptive emotional responses.
In order to chart normal emotion processes, I will first give
a brief overview of the emerging consensus in the affective
sciences on the definition of emotion and the underlying
mechanisms. This will be followed by some empirical data on
the factors involved in the elicitation of emotion and its resulting
quality, intensity, and duration including individual and
cultural differences. I suggest these elements are useful when
discussing issues around “normal” emotional responses and
dysfunctional emotional responses. Emotions are not created
equal. Given the complexity of these issues and the limited
scope of this article, I will focus only on duration of emotional
episodes to support my argument. This has particular relevance
considering the central role of duration in the major
ongoing debate around classification of normal grief and clinical
depression. However, the intensity of emotional feelings,
response patterns, and regulation efforts could be analyzed in
a similar fashion.
There is increasing agreement on defining emotion as an
interface between an organism and its environment, mediating
constantly between changing events and the individual’s
responses. We can distinguish four major functions of emotion:
(a) the evaluation or appraisal of events that happen to us in
terms of their relevance and consequences for our needs, plans,
and values, (b) the preparation, both physiological and psychological,
of actions that are appropriate for dealing with or adapting
to that situation, (c) the representation and regulation of our
potential response to a situation where information acquired
from steps (a) and (b) is integrated and represented in a central
area of the brain that can then monitor and regulate emotion and
(d) the communication of reactions, states, and intentions to
other people (see Frijda & Scherer, 2009).
Translation - Italian La domanda provocatoria è questa: lasceresti che qualcuno diagnosticasse e riparasse un problema al motore della tua auto se egli avesse una scarsa conoscenza riguardo al normale funzionamento dei motori? Probabilmente saresti abbastanza riluttante.
E cosa ne pensi dei disordini emotivi? Non dovremmo sapere come funzionano normalmente le emozioni prima che cerchiamo di diagnosticarle e ripararle? Si tratta di una domanda provocatoria ma centrale rispetto all'argomento di questa sezione speciale – la distinzione tra emozioni normali e anormali o disturbate. In questo mio contributo affermerò che una conoscenza accurata e un consenso riguardo alla natura e alle funzioni delle emozioni e i dati empirici sulle loro manifestazioni sono essenziali per effettuare qualsiasi tentativo di affrontare questo problema scottante che mette a confronto la psichiatria e la psicologia clinica. Anche se la scrittura di questo articolo è stata motivata dal dibattito in corso sulla quinta revisione del DSM, non verranno fatti tentativi di trattare la letteratura riguardo alle problematiche sottostanti, data l’estesa discussione del dibattito presente in altri articoli di questa sezione speciale. Verrà fatto invece un tentativo di sviluppare alcuni criteri concreti per la diagnosi di risposte emozionali inappropriate, disturbate o disadattive, usando un modello concreto sulle emozioni normali e alcuni risultati empirici descrittivi.
Allo scopo di tracciare i normali processi emozionali, farò prima una breve panoramica delle opinioni diffuse nelle scienze affettive riguardo alla definizione di emozione e ai meccanismi sottostanti. A ciò seguiranno alcuni dati empirici sui fattori coinvolti nell’elicitazione delle emozioni e sulla loro conseguente qualità, intensità e durata, incluse le differenze individuali e culturali. Suggerisco che questi elementi diventano utili quando sono usati per discutere problematiche riguardanti le risposte emozionali “normali” e disfunzionali. Le emozioni non sono state create tutte uguali. Data la complessità di questi temi e le possibilità limitate di questo articolo, per supportare il mio ragionamento mi focalizzerò solo sulla durata degli episodi emozionali. Ciò è di particolare rilevanza considerando il ruolo centrale della durata nell’attuale dibattito riguardo alla classificazione di lutto normale e depressione clinica. In ogni caso anche l’intensità dei sentimenti emotivi, degli schemi di riposta e dei tentativi di regolazione, potrebbero essere analizzate in modo simile. C’è un accordo sempre più in aumento nel definire l’emozione come un’interfaccia tra un organismo ed il suo ambiente, che media costantemente tra gli eventi che cambiano e le risposte dell’individuo. Possiamo distinguere quattro funzioni principali delle emozioni: (a) la valutazione degli eventi che ci accadono in merito alla loro importanza e alle conseguenze suoi nostri bisogni, programmi e valori, (b) la preparazione, sia fisiologica che psicologica, di azioni che sono appropriate per affrontare o adattarsi alle situazioni, (c) la rappresentazione e la regolazione delle nostre potenziali risposte ad una situazione in cui le informazioni acquisite dai passi (a) e (b) sono integrate e rappresentate in un’area centrale del cervello che è in grado di monitorare e regolare le emozioni e (d) la comunicazione di reazioni, stati ed intenzioni ad altre persone (vedi Frijda & Scherer, 2009).

Source text - English Protective coatings need to adhere to steel and other substrates, even at extremely high temperatures.
When a building catches fire, intumescent coatings heat up and expand 10 to 75 times their original thickness, so 1 millimeter of coating could expand to as much as 40 to 50 millimeters.
Without strong adhesion, the coating flakes off, exposing steel to intense
heat. When steel heats up to 1,000°F/535°C (the temperature a building fire quickly and easily exceeds), it loses half its strength.
At 1,000°F/535°C, a steel beam supporting 200 tons can only support half that weight, putting the structure at risk of collapsing. In a fire, steel softens and deforms, so much so that if heated to 1,200°F/650°C you could easily bend a giant steel beam.
Strong adhesion in acrylic copolymer latex paint allows the coating to stick to
the steel, even when heat causes the steel to lose shape. Additionally, the
intumescent coating keeps the steel from reaching those dangerous temperatures by insulating the substrate, even at elevated ambient temperatures, such as in a fire.
Translation - Italian I rivestimenti protettivi devono essere in grado di aderire all’acciaio e ad altri substrati anche a temperature estremamente elevate. Quando un edificio prende fuoco, i rivestimenti intumescenti si scaldano e si espandono da 10 a 75 volte il proprio spessore originale; quindi un millimetro di rivestimento si può espandere fino a 40 o 50 millimetri.
Senza una forte capacità di adesione il rivestimento si sfalda esponendo l’acciaio ad un intenso calore. Quando l’acciaio si scalda fino a 1,000°F/535°C (una temperatura che un incendio in un edificio supera velocemente e facilmente) perde metà della propria robustezza.
A una temperatura di 1,000°F/535°C, una trave d’acciaio che sostiene normalmente 200 tonnellate è in grado di sostenere solo metà di quel peso, mettendo la struttura a rischio di crollo. Durante un incendio, l’acciaio si ammorbidisce e si deforma fino al punto che una grossa trave d’acciaio può essere piegata facilmente se scaldata fino ai 1,200°F/650°C.
La forte adesione delle vernici in lattice di copolimero acrilico permettono al rivestimento di rimanere incollato all'acciaio anche quando l’acciaio si deforma a causa del calore. Inoltre, il rivestimento intumescente impedisce all'acciaio di raggiungere temperature pericolose isolando il substrato anche a temperature ambientali elevate come durante un incendio.

Source text - English 1 • Insert the two windscreen tabs into the slots on the bonnet. Turn the windscreen in the direction of the arrow.
2 • Fasten the windscreen using the two screws supplied.
3 • Join the two parts of the steering wheel.
4 • Insert the horn in the central hole in the steering wheel following the instructions in its packaging.
5 • Apply sticker No. 6. Insert the steering wheel onto the steering rod as shown in the figure.
6 • Fix the steering wheel using the screw and bolt supplied, taking care to insert the screw into the round hole and the bolt in the hexagonal hole.
7 • Insert the toy key in its slot in the dashboard.
8 • Apply sticker No. 2. Install the bumper by inserting the lower tabs into the two slots on the body first and then by fitting the two upper bushes.
9 • Fasten the bumper using the two screws supplied.
10 • Install the seat bases by inserting the 2 U-shaped tube in the seat supports.
11 • Place the right-hand base you just assembled on the right-hand side of the vehicle, as shown in the figure (the side is indicated on the lower part of each base). Proceed in the same way for the other base.
12 • Fasten each base using the 2 screws provided.
13 • Loosen the knobs underneath the seats.
Place the seats aligning them with the holes according to the child’s height. The vehicle has 2 positions (see diagram).
Fasten the seats to the bases by means of the previously loosened knobs.
Translation - Italian 1 – Inserire le due alette del parabrezza nelle apposite fessure sul cofano. Ruotare il parabrezza nella direzione della freccia.
2 - Fissare il parabrezza usando le due viti fornite in dotazione.
3 – Unire le due parti del volante.
4 – Inserire il clacson nel foro centrale del volante seguendo le istruzioni incluse nella confezione.
5 – Applicare l’adesivo N. 6. Inserire il volante nella barra dello sterzo come indicato in figura.
6 – Fissare il volante usando la vite ed il bullone forniti in dotazione, facendo attenzione ad inserire la vite nel foro circolare ed il bullone nel foro esagonale.
7 – Inserire la chiave giocattolo sul cruscotto nell’apposita fessura.
8 - Applicare l’adesivo n.2. Installare il paraurti inserendo prima le due alette inferiori nelle due fessure presenti sulla carrozzeria ed incastrando successivamente le due boccole superiori.
9 – Fissare il paraurti usando le due viti fornite in dotazione.
10 – Installare le due basi dei sedili inserendo i due tubi ad U nei sostegni dei sedili.
11 – Posizionare la base di destra appena assemblata sul lato destro del veicolo come mostrato in figura (il lato è indicato nella parte bassa di ogni base). Procedere allo stesso modo per l’altra base.
13 – Fissare ognuna delle basi con le due viti fornite in dotazione.
13 – Allentare le manopole sotto i sedili.
14 – Posizionare i sedili allineandoli ai fori a seconda dell’altezza del bambino. Il veicolo ha due posizioni (vedi il diagramma). Fissare I sedili alle basi utilizzando le manopole precedentemente allentate.
