English to Romanian: Phraseological units in translation (excerpt) General field: Science Detailed field: Linguistics
Source text - English These analyses of the corpora study aspects related to different types of idioms and proverbs, specific types of translation problems and strategies for the translation of phraseological units. A first problem is failure to identify the idiom or proverb in the target text, and usually appears in the first stage of the translation of phraseology. This problem can be caused by the existence of a plausible literal interpretation of the phraseological unit in that particular context, by certain manipulations of the units with a view to create special effects, by fragmentary quotations of the units, etc. The second problem is misinterpretation of the meaning of the phraseological unit in context. In this case as well there are certain aspects that can create difficulties in the interpretation of the sense, such as the existence of different phraseological meanings, ‘false friends’ which can easily mislead the translator, etc. These two aspects are particularly important in the translation of phraseological units because they can directly influence the translation solutions the translator will adopt, leading to more or less satisfactory results. Another problematic issue which we examined is the clarity of the phraseological meaning in the target text, namely the degree to which the target reader can understand the meaning of the original unit.
Translation - Romanian Analizele corpusurilor se referă la aspecte legate de diferite tipuri de expresii idiomatice şi proverbe, tipuri specifice de probleme de traducere şi strategii pentru traducerea unităţilor frazeologice. O primă problemă se referă la neidentificarea expresiei idiomatice sau a proverbului în textul sursă, şi survine, de fapt, în prima etapă a traducerii unităţilor frazeologice. Această problemă poate apărea datorită posibilităţii interpretării literale a unităţii în contextul respectiv, a unor modificări interne ale unităţilor, în scopul creării unor efecte speciale, a citării parţiale a unităţii de către autor, etc. A doua problemă se referă la interpretarea eronată a sensului unităţii frazeologice în context. Şi aici există mai multe elemente care pot creea dificultăţi în interpretarea sensului, ca de pildă existenţa mai multor sensuri frazeologice, ‘falşii prieteni’ ce pot cu uşurinţă induce în eroare pe traducător, etc. Aceste două aspecte sunt deosebit de importante în procesul de traducere a unităţilor frazeologice, deoarece au o influenţă directă asupra soluţiilor de traducere pe care traducătorul le adoptă, conducând la rezultate mai mult sau mai puţin reuşite. Un alt aspect problematic examinat aici este claritatea cu care traducătorul a redat sensul unităţii frazeologice în textul ţintă, adică gradul în care cititorul ţintă poate capta sensul unităţii originale.

Asta este o axiomă care ar trebui să mă scutească de truda de a scrie o nouă scrisoare. Totuşi, chiar şi eu ştiu că această concluzie matematică, ce pare adevărată, poate fi tot atât de bine un adevăr ori un sofism.
Logica ştie să ticluiască raţionamente inatacabile care, cu toate acestea, nu conving. Cu câtă uşurinţă se fac deducţii precise pornind de la o bază falsă!
În schimb, convingerea proprie reuşeşte de obicei să înduplece, chiar dacă în metoda raţionamentului domneşte cel mai mare haos. Atât de irezistibilă este puterea credinţei!
Religia este iubire, şi deoarece este iubire, este poezie. Aceasta este tema pe care mi-am propus s-o discut astăzi.
Pentru a trata o chestiune atât de mare într-un spaţiu atât de scurt şi cu atât de puţine cunoştinţe câte am eu, mă simt încurajat de o singură speranţă: dacă pentru a convinge este suficient să crezi, eu simt ceea ce scriu.

I am a Romanian translator and interpreter for English and Spanish.
I have always been fascinated by the creative potential of words, which is clearly reflected in my studies, i.e. a PhD in Philology (Translation Studies), an MA in "Applied Linguistics, English Language Teaching" and a BA in Philology (English major, Spanish minor) from the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University in Iasi.
In addition to my academic background, I have been working as a freelance translator (English and Spanish) for 18 years. I started doing my first translations during my second year of BA studies and I received the certification from the Romanian Ministry of Justice after graduating, in 2007. I have mainly focused on translating literary works, but have also worked on projects involving various other fields (linguistics, history, education, theology, tourism, art, social sciences, marketing, advertising, etc.). Starting from 2016, I have also been subtitling videos for movies, series, documentaries, etc.
I am hard working and very passionate about my work as a translator. I consider my well-developed communication skills, creativity and sharp analytical abilities make me a great candidate for your translation projects.
