Bachelor's degree - SSEES London
Experience
Years of experience: 8. Registered at ProZ.com: Jun 2016.
I was born in 1973 in West Germany, of mixed Danish and Scottish parentage, and was brought up trilingual. In 1983 my family moved back to the United Kingdom, from where we regularly visited Germany and Denmark, and I also studied French and German at school up to the age of eighteen.
In 1997 I enrolled at the School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES) in London to study Czech Literature, largely out of frustration at the lack of Czech writing available in English. As a result I am competent in written Czech generally, and I am currently engaged in translating several Czech poets (Karel Hlaváček, Jindřich Štyrský, František Halas among others). While living in Prague in the course of my degree I also earned a TEFL qualification and worked as an English teacher.
After graduating I worked in a number of jobs; from 2006 to 2016 I owned and managed two online booksellers (Renegade Books and Healthy Planet Books), while continuing to do literary translations, such as the previously mentioned poetry from Czech. In the last few years I have also done many jobs of translation from German and Danish, such as cvs, job applications, legal documents, and architectural articles. I have recently also been working on technical and engineering projects, including a long-term media review project for Microsoft, language overview for Google Translate, and a lengthy series of translations of engineering texts from German on emissions testing for the German car industry, medical texts, sales contracts, as well as post-editing and MTPE. I have also undertaken literary translations from German, recently of Paul Celan and Unica Zürn, and French, of early texts by Antonin Artaud and Joe Bousquet's Black Notebook, which are due to be published by Infinity Land Press: I have recently started translating other texts from French, particularly legal and media texts.
