Already at 6 a.m. people in Phnom Penh are rushing and bumping into each other on dusty, narrow side streets. Waiters and waitresses in black-and-white uniforms swing open shop doors as the aroma of noodle soup greets waiting customers. Street vendors push food carts pilled with steamed dumplings, smoked beef teriyaki sticks, and roasted peanuts along the sidewalks and begin to set up for another day of business. Nonetheless, when I read About Sayer Ji’s startling perception of wheat germ agglutinin (WGA), and the several pathways by which it can impact our mental and physical health, partly due to its ability to cross protective barriers of the gut and the brain, I was, at first, very skeptical. Further investigation revealed that he really was onto something new. And the implications of this new understanding are, to say the least, dramatic. His work raises legitimate questions about one facet of gluten grains that has largely been ignored by the gastrointestinal research community. It opens windows of understanding. Eigenlijk wil ik de rest van mijn leven reizen en werken voor kost en inwoning. Dat kan overal zijn maar bij voorkeur waar het warm en zonnig is.
Heb ik iets om bij te dragen? Ja, ik denk het absoluut. Ten eerste heb ik inmiddels heel veel ervaring in het omgaan en werken met mensen van over de hele wereld, met name als het gaat om het aanleren van een taal. Ten tweede is daar mijn positiviteit en het vermogen om negatieve situaties als een positieve kracht te zien en niet te vergeten mijn openheid ten aanzien van verschillende mensen, culturen, plaatsen en situaties.
Ik zal eerlijk zijn, ik doe dit niet uit idealisme om de wereld te verbeteren; ik ben geen wereldverbeteraar. Ik doe dit in de eerste plaats voor mijzelf, vanuit mijn eigen idealisme dat het mogelijk zou moeten zijn om kennis en kunde te ruilen voor eten en onderdak. Ik denk nog steeds dat het mogelijk is al is de markt daarvoor op het moment behoorlijk verziekt door het kapitalisme. In veel gevallen moet je ook geld doneren als je je vrijwillig wilt inzetten en een positieve bijdrage wilt leveren aan een bepaalde organisatie of een bepaald project.
Ik begrijp dat er in de meeste gevallen geld nodig is om een project in leven te houden maar ik denk ook dat organisaties het verschil moeten blijven zien tussen mensen en de verschillende mogelijkheden die ze hebben. Sommigen zijn in staat om (veel) geld te doneren zonder er iets persoonlijks aan toe te voegen. Anderen zijn alleen in staat om het tegenovergestelde te doen en weer anderen kunnen beiden. En er zijn mensen die alleen gebruik maken van de verschillende diensten die worden aangeboden. Ik denk dat elke manier zijn voors en tegens heeft, dat ze allemaal nodig zijn. Iedereen heeft zijn eigen unieke kracht en kwaliteit en is nodig op deze wereld om daarmee op zijn of haar manier een bijdrage te leveren.
Wat is er op dit moment gaande in de vrijwilligersbusiness? Het laatste woord van de vorige zin zegt het al: het is een business geworden, sterk beïnvloed door het kapitalisme met als enige en absolute focus geld genereren. Gevolg daarvan is dat men je heel graag wil hebben als vrijwilliger maar dat je daarvoor wel moet betalen, in ieder geval voor je eigen kost en inwoning maar het liefst nog meer. Ik vind het vreemd dat kennis en ervaring geen waarde meer hebben als het gaat om het leveren van een positieve bijdrage. Ook de inzet van je tijd wordt daarbij vergeten. En er is nog een ander, in mijn ogen negatief, resultaat van deze ontwikkeling en dat is de houding van de gemiddelde vrijwilliger. Hij of zij 'koopt' eigenlijk een alternatieve manier van vakantie houden en wat doen de meeste mensen in hun vakantie? Precies: niets! Nou willen de meeste vrijwilligers nog wel iets doen maar vooral en echt niet teveel dus van werken voor je geld (of kost en inwoning), is hier geen sprake. Of eigenlijk wel, maar dan in omgekeerde richting: de organisatie moet aan het werk want de vrijwilliger betaalt. Het enige dat hier telt, is hoeveel dollars, euro's of welke munteenheid dan ook, er binnenkomen of overblijven nadat de vaste kosten zijn betaald. Vanuit financieel en zakelijk oogpunt gezien, begrijp ik dat en als je echt een zakelijke onderneming wilt runnen, is dat een onmisbare factor maar blijkbaar werkt dat tegenwoordig ook zo voor een non-profit organisatie.
Ja, ook zij hebben vaste kosten zoals de huur, water, energie en overige organisatorische kosten en ja, die moeten betaald worden maar in mijn ogen moet dat kunnen vanuit de diensten die worden aangeboden. Zoals een organisatie met een restaurant en guesthouse draaiende gehouden zou moeten worden uit die inkomsten. Of een organisatie met een naaiatelier of eentje die toeristische trips aanbiedt. Er zijn legio voorbeelden denkbaar. De winst van een vrijwilliger is dan zijn of haar bijdrage van kennis en ervaring in een specifieke richting waardoor de dienstverlening verbetert en er dus meer inkomsten gegenereerd kunnen worden in de toekomst. Een blijvende bron van inkomsten op de lange termijn maar het gros van de organisaties heeft alleen een korte termijn visie en gaat dus alleen voor het overgewaardeerde geld.
Wat is eigenlijk de moraal van dit verhaal? Eigenlijk is het dat iedereen gelijk gewaardeerd zou moeten worden om z'n eigen unieke mogelijkheden en kwaliteiten. Donors, begrijp me niet verkeerd want ik zie het doneren van geld ook als een kwaliteit en eentje die nodig is, dus dank aan al die miljoenen donoren wereldwijd. Maar vergeet niet dat er behalve het geld ook fysieke inspanning nodig is om al dat geld om te zetten in iets tastbaars. Iedereen draagt op zijn of haar eigen unieke manier bij om een project mogelijk te maken en beide zijn onmisbaar. Ook de mensen die alleen van een aangeboden dienst gebruik maken, zijn nodig, ook zij dragen bij aan het in stand houden ervan.
Is het nu voor mij onmogelijk geworden om dat te doen wat ik in eerste instantie wilde?. Nee, ik denk het niet maar ik moet wel een andere manier vinden om het te realiseren. Er zijn 2 factoren die ik moet zien te combineren: geld en fysiek inzet. Realistisch gezien betekent het dat ik op zoek ben naar een donor die mij kan ondersteunen zodat ik mij kan blijven inzetten om de wereld een beetje mooier te maken.
Eigenlijk is het niet zozeer mij persoonlijk ondersteunen als wel een donatie doen aan het project waarmee zij mij kost en inwoning kunnen aanbieden.
Wat kan ik doen als tegenprestatie, behalve het inzetten van mijn kennis en ervaring voor een bepaald project? Wat denk je van het schrijven van een artikel als dit, om bewustwording te creëren om op die manier met donoren te vinden? Of meer mensen zoals ik, die met een positieve instelling ten aanzien van de wereld en zijn bewoners hun leven in balans willen houden door aan de ene kant te doen wat ze willen een aan de andere kant te doen wat ze kunnen.

Actually, what I want for the rest of my life, is to travel around the world and work for food and housing. It can be anywhere in the world but I prefer somewhere warm and sunny. Do I have something to contribute? Yes, absolutely. First of all, I have a lot of experience working with people from all over the world, especially when it comes to teaching. Second is my positivity and ability to turn negative situations into a positive force and strength and last but not least I have openness towards a lot of different people, culture, places and situations.
I'll be honest, I'm not doing this out of idealism to improve the world; I'm not like that. I mainly do this for myself, out of my own idealism that it should be possible to exchange knowledge and expertise for food and housing. I still think it's possible although the market for this is quite blighted by capitalism. In many cases you need to make also a donation if you want to volunteer and make a positive contribution to a particular organization or project.
I do understand, in the majority of cases, money is necessary to keep a project alive but I also think that an organization should be able to see the difference between people and the different ways they can contribute. Some people are able to donate (a lot of) money without adding some effort of their own. Others are only able to just do the opposite and there are people who can do both. And there are people who only make use of various services offered. I think each way has its pros and cons but they all are necessary. Everyone has its own unique strength and quality and is needed in this world to make a contribution in his or her own way.
What is currently going on in the volunteering business? The last word of the last sentence says it all: it has become a business strongly influenced by capitalism with an absolute focus on generating money. Result is that if you'd like to volunteer, you also have to donate money, at least enough to pay for your food and accommodation. To me it's strange that knowledge and experience are undervalued when it comes to making a contribution. Also the commitment of your time is definitely forgotten. There is also another, in my opinion, negative result of this way of development and that's the attitude of the average volunteer. He or she actually 'buys' an alternative way of spending a holiday and what do the majority of people do during their holiday? Exactly: nothing! Most volunteers are still willing to do at least something but really not too much so this is not at all working for your money (or for food and shelter). Actually it is, but in the reverse direction. The organization has to work because the volunteer is paying. The only thing that counts here, is how many dollars, euro's or any other currency there are after your fixed costs are paid. From a financial and business point of view I can understand this very well and if you really want to run a profitable business enterprise, it is an indispensable factor but today it appears also to be like that for non-profit organizations.
Yes, they also have fixed costs such as rent, water, electricity and other organizational costs but in my opinion it should be possible to run it from the services offered. For example, an organization with a restaurant should be able to run on the profits from that. Or an organization who organizes touristic trips. There are countless imaginable examples. The profits of a volunteer and his or her contribution of knowledge and experience in a specific field should be to improve the offered services and therefore more income can be generated in the future. Then it becomes a permanent source of income in the long run but most organizations only have a short-term vision and therefore are only interested in the highly overvalued money.
What's the deeper meaning of this story? In fact, it's that everyone should be equally valued to his of her own unique capabilities and qualities. Donors, don't get me wrong - I also see donating money as a quality and also as one that's necessary so thanks to all those millions of donors worldwide. But let's not forget that except money also physical effort is needed to put all that money into something tangible. Everyone carries his or her unique way to contribute and all are indispensable. Also the people who only make use of a service are necessary, they are also contributing.
Did it become impossible for me to do and live the way I wanted to do? No, I don't think so, I only have to find another way to realize it. There are 2 factors that I have to combine here: money and experience.
Realistically speaking it means I have to find a donor who can support me so I can continue to work and make this world a little nicer. In fact, it's not so much supporting me but making a donation to the project with which they can offer me room and board. What can I do in return, except to use my knowledge and experience on the selected project? What do you think of writing an article like this to raise awareness and find more donors that way? Or more people like me, with a positive attitude to the world and its people, who want to keep their lives in balance with on one side doing what they want and on the other side doing what they can.

Special projects I've done were the translation of a book with 101 quotes that is available on Amazon and in the last 1 1/2 years I subtitled 12 movies for the entertainment industry. On average, I translate 250-300 words per hour without the use of any cat tool, depending on the subject/field. I have experience in using cat tools such as WordFast, SmartCAT, CafeTran, Memsource, MemoQ, Transifex and XTM, which allows me to speed up my translation to 500 words per hour. The maximum number of words on an average day is 3000 to ensure a perfect translation.
