DOIG: Many of the paintings were not 'Canadian' at all- they just ended up looking that way. Ski Jacket was based on a photograph from a Toronto newspaper of a Japanese ski resort. It reminded me of a black and white oriental scroll painting. The original photograph was tall and narrow. I started making one panel, but the scale was wrong- it seemed too narrow. So I made another panel the same size that both mirrored and distorted the original panel. It had this central bushy area that everything seemed to flow out of. At the time I had made relatively few paintings with figures in them, and so I thought why not make a painting with hundreds of figures in it, representing them with little flicks of colour. When you look closely you realize from their oddly controrted body positions that many of the skiers are beginners- a lot of them are struggling to stand on their skis.
SCOTT: What about your treatment of source photographs?
DOIG: Sometimes paint gets spilled or sprayed on them, and it adds an unexpected layer that you can then refer to. The reality of the original feels less constricting, an this provides an opening. It takes the reality away from the photograph and turns it into a more abstract image.

DOIG: Muitas das pinturas não tinham nada de 'canadense', só acabaram tendo essa aparência. Ski Jacket foi baseada em uma fotografia de um jornal de Toronto de um resort de ski no Japão. Me lembrou de um sumi-ê. A fotografia original era alta e estreita. Eu comecei a fazer um painel, mas as dimensões estavam erradas- parecia estreita demais. Então eu fiz um outro painel do mesmo tamanho que espelhava e distorcia o painel original. Tinha uma área central com um arbusto da qual tudo parecia sair. Naquela época eu tinha feito relativamente poucas pinturas com figura humanae então eu pensei, por que não fazer uma pintura com centenas de pessoas nela, representadas com pequenas pinceladas de cor. Quando você olha de perto, você vê pelas posições contorcidas que muitos esquiadores são iniciantes- muitos estão lutando para conseguir ficar em pé nos seus esquis.
SCOTT: E o que você me diz sobre o tratamento das fotografias de referência?
DOIG: Às vezes tinta cai nelas ou elas recebem um jato de spray de tinta, e isso adiciona uma camada de tinta inesperada que depois vira mais uma referência. A realidade do original fica menos sufocante, isso dá uma certa abertura. Tira a realidade da fotografia e torna ela uma imagem mais abstrata.
