Ao contrário dos animais o ser humano transforma o seu ambiente, adaptando-o às suas necessidades, às reais e às socialmente induzidas, mas termina transforma-se a si próprio e à sociedade. Neste sentido podemos dizer que somos o produto das nossas próprias criações.

1 – O Homem perante as tecnologias
Para McLuhan, qualquer tecnologia é uma extensão de nós próprios, dos nossos próprios sentidos. Assim, o automóvel, é uma extensão das nossas pernas, o telefone, uma extensão da nossa voz, o computador, uma extensão do nosso sistema nervoso central, uma prótese cerebral.
Enquanto extensões de nós próprios, qualquer tecnologia, exterioriza, amplifica e modifica muitas funções cognitivas. O computador amplifica a nossa capacidade intelectual. As mudanças cognitivas, podem não ser rápidas e demorar bastante tempo a perceber-se. Demorou-se muito tempo a perceber que a escrita e a imprensa influenciaram o desenvolvimento da racionalidade no ocidente, e o predomínio do hemisfério esquerdo do cérebro sobre o direito .
Com a utilização das novas tecnologias da informação e comunicação (TIC), já não existe o predomínio da escrita, mas começa a ser preponderante a comunicação visual.

Utilizamos as tecnologias para amplificar os nossos sentidos e capacidades. A sua influência é tal, que altera o que sabemos, a forma como pensamos, a forma como vemos o mundo e como nos relacionamos e actuamos. Aquilo que sabemos depende das tecnologias que utilizamos. À medida que as utilizamos em determinados contextos sócio-culturais, vamos apropriando-nos delas, internalizando-as, vão fazendo parte de nós, como uma segunda natureza, ao ponto de se tornarem invisíveis e não nos apercebemos delas.

For McLuhan any technology is a stretch of our own, of our own senses. So, the car is a stretch of our legs, the telephone, a stretch of our voice, the computer, a stretch of tour central nervous system, a cerebral prosthesis.
While stretches of our own, any technology externalizes, amplifies and modifies many cognitive functions. The computer amplifies our intellectual capacity. The cognitive changes may not be quick and may linger enough time to comprehend. It took a long time to realize that the writing and the press influenced the development of the rationality in the west and the predominance of the left hemisphere of the brain over the right one .
With the utilization of the new information and communication technologies (ICT), there is no longer the dominance of the writing, but it starts to be preponderant the visual communication.

We utilize the technologies to amplify our senses and capacities. Its influence is such that alters what we know, the way we think, the way we see the world and how we relate and act with each other. What we know depends on the technologies we utilize. En la mayoría de las casas había parrandas de viernes cuyos bombos y platillos repercutían en las entrañas. Cualquiera podía entrar por cincuenta centavos en la fiesta que le gustara más, pero también podía quedarse bailando de gorra en los sardineles.
