English to German: Useful information for guests renting a villa in Italy (abstract), English to German: Detailed field: Tourism & Travel
Source text - English We hope you will enjoy your stay at our home, We want you to feel as comfortable as you feel at your own home. We have done our best to have it well-equipped with good quality furniture and appliances, and to have it clean and tidy. We appreciate enormously if you also will treat our home with the same care as we do.
Outdoor lights and switches
There is a switch on the left as you enter the front door. The exterior lamps outside the front door as well as the lights by the swimming pool are operated from here.
Next to the kitchen door that leads to the patio there are switches for the two outdoor lights.
Electricity is significantly more expensive and limited in Italy than in many other countries. Although we have an increased max limit of 4.5 kw (standard is 3kw) the power might shut down if you run too many appliances at the same time (especially pool pump, microwave, iron and dishwasher can be difficult to use at the same time)
Outdoor electrical box and indoor breaker box
You'll find the electrical box outside next to the front door. The key can be found on the wooden key holder next to the downstairs toilet.
If you have had too many appliances turned on at the same time and the power is cut you will have to open the electricity box by the front door and push up the big lever (on the right).
There is also a breaker box in the utility room (entrance is on the side of the house, towards the gate). The water pump is managed from this box in case it has switched off (pull up the lever for Pozzo Nuovo).
Fireplace Usage
The fireplace can be used. If there are strong winds outside there can be problems with too much smoke staying inside the house. To start the fire the best way is to:
• Use small kindling and a few bits of newspaper to start the fire at the center and very back of the fireplace, against its back wall. Add larger and larger pieces of wood as the fire gets going, but do not make a roaring fire or let the flames migrate toward the front of the fireplace.
• Usually two large pieces of wood placed so they cross about their centers will maintain a good fire; stay lit a long while and not create smoke anywhere.

Source text - English Churches
The area around Anghiari has many very early parish churches. These are known as "pievi" (singular "pieve"), a word derived from the latin "plebes" (the common people). They were built during the early phases of Christianisation in which baptism was a crucial element. The pievi remained for centuries the only places authorised to carry out baptisms. We have listed a few of the many Pievi’s in the area.
The Pieve di Santa Maria a Corsano
The Romanesque parish church of Santa Maria a Corsano is located near the village of San Leo di Anghiari on the road between Sansepolcro and Arezzo. It is a 12 C church probably built by the Camaldulian Order on the foundations of a Roman temple
The Pieve di Santa Maria alla Sovara
The parish church of Santa Maria della Sovara (Santa Maria of the River Sovara) is located at the foot of the west-facing hillside of Anghiari, near the Libbia road, on a big curve just before the village of Tavernelle. The earliest documentation for the existence of this church goes back to the 11 C but it is believed to have much earlier origins (7 C or 8 C)
Castles / Villas
As in many of the long-populated areas of Tuscany, there are a number of fine castles and castellated villas in the vicinity of Anghiari. These fortified dwellings defended the Upper Tiber Valley (Valtiberina) and the valleys that led into it along the lines of attack that connected Arezzo to the Adriatic Sea. Along the right-hand side of the Sovara valley, there are Valialle, which goes back to before 1000 AD but of which only a few traces of the walls remain, Casale, Upachi, with its recently renovated church, and Scoiano, where much remains, including a stone doorway and traces of frescoes that indicate an important past. Villa Scoiano is on the road to the house when you come from Anghiari
Castello dei Sorci
In 1268 the Castle of the Sorci was destroyed by the German forces of Corradino of Swabia who was fighting against Carlo of Angiò. It subsequently came under the control of Florence and became the home of the Mercenary Captain, Baldaccio d'Anghiari. At one time there were up to thirty men-at-arms guarding its moated walls. Over the following centuries the castle, like many during the peace that Florentine domination provided, was gradually converted into fortified villa incorporating the original tower. The castle took on its present aspect in the 17 C and today houses a quite famous restaurant.
Castle of Montauto
Montauto was already in existence during the period of the Etruscans (approximately 8th to 5th centuries BC ), who took advantage of the rich copper mines in its territory. It was a Roman and then Byzantine lookout tower and came under the control of the feudal Lord Goffredo, son on Ildebando, to whom Emperor Otto I conferred the property in the Upper Tiber Valley in 967 AD. The castle itself has its origins in 1170/80 which is the period in which the Lords of Montauto are first mentioned as the feudal rulers.
The castle was the strongest in the area, with three rings of defensive walls and a powerful keep. The importance of the castle was principally due to its position: at a height of over 700 m, it was, to all intents and purposes, impregnable (except to the craftiness of the Florentines), with two sides sheer right down to the Sovara river, one protected by the rocks of the mountain and the front, facing the only route of access, heavily fortified and from which its domination of the surrounding territory was total.
It was also the place where St. Francis of Assisi liked to pause during his journeys to and from La Verna and, until 1503, the cassock that he had been wearing when he received the stigmata at La Verna was kept and treasured in the Chapel of Montauto. 1503 was, in fact, the year that the Florentines took the castle by trickery and all of its treasures were stolen.
The castle was eventually almost totally destroyed before being rebuilt in the Renaissance era, the most obvious sign of which is the beautiful corner tower with its steep, conical base facing the access route and attributed to the architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini.
The Lombard Fort of Toppole
Toppole Castle was another part of the fortification system that defended the right hand side of the Sovara valley. The church of San Clemente is in the middle of the castle complex. It was certainly in existence in the first half of the 8 C but some tombs that have recently been discovered indicate a history going back even further than that
Piero della Francesca
Sansepolcro was the birthplace of Piero della Francesca an in the neigbouring village Monterchi is his famous fresco Madonna del Parto. The Madonna del Parto ("Madonna of Parturition") is the name of an iconic depiction of the Virgin Mary shown as pregnant which was developed in Italy, mainly in Tuscany in the 14th century. The most famous work showing this subject is the fresco painting by the Italian Renaissance master Piero della Francesca. Museo Civico di Sansepolcro have three other famous frescoes: The Resurrection, the Head of Saint Julian and La Madonna della Misericordia.

Source text - English Driving directions from Fiumicino Airport:
When you leave Fiumicino Airport follow the signs towards Firenze, you will have to join the Rome ring road “Grande Raccordo Anulare” for about 30 km. Once on the ring road - follow the exit to Firenze (A1), the exit can sometimes be quite busy as there is a road joining the ring road just before the Firenze exit.
There are two different options to get to the house. One is slightly faster and one is a bit more scenic.
• The fastest option: Continue on A1 from Rome (towards Firenze) up to Monte S. Savino (about 160 km from Rome). Exit at Monte S. Savino and follow the signs towards Arezzo (road E78) after you have paid the road toll
• Once you reach the outskirts of Arezzo you should follow the signs towards Sansepolcro (SS73)
• About one kilometer after you have passed the little village “Le Ville” you will pass exits towards “Citerna” and “Monterchi” on your right hand side, just 100 meters later you will have to turn left towards “Catgliano” / “Tortigliano” (The sign posts are sometimes littered with different village names so it can be difficult to read them all in time)
• This country road will end at a T-junction, turn right towards Tortigliano
• After a couple of hundred meters you will come to a junction, turn left towards Tortigliano (on to the road that have garbage bins to the left (those are the closest bins to the house).
German to English: Diwali (Indian Festival of Light)
Source text - German What significance does the festival have in the business world?
In private homes the picture of the God of Luck, Ganesh is put next to the picture of Lakshmi, the Goddess of Fortune, Prosperity and Beauty. According to Indian belief one can never have enough fortune and luck, especially as a businessman. After the daily cleaning ritual (purity) and prayer they rush to their shops and offices. In the Indian business world Diwali is also the beginning of a new business year. On that important day one has to make sure that the goddess of fortune doesn't pass one's shop by. All Indian business places are open on that day and the customers line up. Diwali is the one day of the year when they might get something for free and hardly anybody wants to miss this opportunity. A crowded shop on Diwali is for all shop owners a sign of good luck for an upcoming successful business year.
Businessmen put their new account books on the altar in front of Lakshmi's picture and pray for prosperity and success. In the middle between the books they put a special mixture of rice and saffron as a lucky charm. Now the official inauguration of the new account books is over.
After this ritual employees receive gifts or, according to the annual accounts, even bonuses. The gifts vary according to position but no matter what kind of gift the main emphasis lies on the boss's expression of appreciation.
As efficient businessmen, Indians don't forget to maintain contacts to customers, business partners and neighbors on this day; after the prayer they visit them personally to bring presents. As all businessmen have this clever idea at the same time and this task has to be completed on the same day, the resulting traffic chaos is enormous.
More simple gifts consist for example of sweets, cashew nuts or calendars - more expensive gifts are saris for the ladies or a tie for the men. Very important customers might also get very expensive presents. Foreign businessmen should not visit their Indian partners during Diwali unless they want to bring them presents.
Translation - English
German to English: HURRA - WIR LEBEN IM PARADIES!
Translation - English Imagine yourself living on a fictitious Caribbean island called Paradise. If there is a resemblance to any person living or dead it is, of course, a pure coincidence and was never intended. The island names Paradise and Pirate Island are products of the author’s imagination. The inhabitants of each Caribbean island perceive their island as “Paradise”. There is also always another island close by, which they deeply dislike.
Why was I prompted to write this satire? Firstly it’s for the dear tourists. They utter statements, which I am never, and I stress NEVER allowed to question. If I do the sparkle in their eyes disappears, their faces turn gloomy and the smiles die on their lips. The most common sentences used are: “Oh my God, how lucky you are that you can lie under palm trees the whole day long!”
How they get to have this absurd idea in the first place I’ll never know. Here is another one: “Oh God, how we envy you! Permanently in Paradise and no more reason to complain!” This statement also remains unexplained. As well as the God status.
Beware if you contradict them. They don’t like it and they tend to get cool and reserved as if you had insulted them. If you should dare to tell them that you have been up since 6 am and you had nothing but trouble all day they tend to ignore it. So usually I don’t mention it, as it doesn’t get me anywhere.
And secondly there are the islanders. They ask me with a bright smile and shiny eyes how I’m enjoying Paradise. They don’t seem to be able to differentiate between a working person and a tourist. Even in Paradise it should have registered in their minds that not all Caucasians are tourists. If one enlightens them on the fact that one just happens to be coming from WORK they carry on undeterred asking if you are enjoying Paradise.

English to German: Tele-Coaching – the new staff training in the age of globalization Detailed field: International Org/Dev/Coop
Source text - English Successful Management in the Global Village”
Target group: German executives and employees living and working in China (long term)
Starting point:
The multinational form of work of global business connections is characterized by dynamics and accompanied by challenges. Due to China’s sheer cultural magnitude the Chinese business world has a very own constellation which is in many ways different and more complex than in Germany. An ambitious leader needs above all perseverance, strength of nerve and a clear overview. He should focus mainly on the strengthening of collegial solidarity and pool all forms of energy. Managers need information and support to be able to make the right decisions and to react adequately.
Advanced skills are needed for a better understanding and the successful management of interpersonal relations in a German-Chinese context inside a company. Differences of opinion and conflicts between colleagues and partners might not always be strictly factual. When do personal interests come into play? When has the cultural background to be taken into consideration? How much individual emotional input exists? How is it possible to achieve a conflict-free cooperation with the Chinese and successfully accomplish all projects?
Leaders need empathy and determination to create a positive work environment; to master specific situations in the daily work routine requires creativity and acute perception. Leaders have to be prudent and creative because solutions depend on the situation and the individuals involved. This coaching method supports leaders to optimize their global management skills.
As the coach and the clients are located in different parts of the world a personal conversation is impossible. Therefore Tele-Coaching was conceptualized. Despite the distance Tele-Coaching gives all those who work in China extra occupational training opportunities as well as China-specific support in German.
Translation - German „Erfolgreiches Management im globalen Village“
