Fast mono laser printers are still the stalwarts of most offices and OKI has revamped its mid-range offerings with new LED engines and built-in duplex print. In the process, they've updated the styling and improved the looks.
In a cream and light-grey case, the B431dn is neat and unobtrusive, as a good printer should be. The deep-set indentation in its top cover shows that it's designed to cope with relatively high workloads, where higher-capacity output trays are a necessity.
This capacity is matched by a 250-sheet input tray and a flip down 100-sheet multi-purpose tray for letterheads or envelopes. An additional tray, with a healthy 530-sheet capacity, is available as an option, to sit underneath the printer.
The control panel, which OKI points out is the same as on their new range of colour printers, thus making it easy to move from one model to the other, has a simple, four-way control disc for menu operations and two buttons for Online and Cancel. Indicator LEDs are mounted in the printer's front page to show Ready and Attention conditions.
There's a 2-line by 16-character LCD display, which would be a bonus if you could read it. As it is, without a backlight, with the display angled at around 45-degrees, and with a reflective acrylic face, it's very hard to see what it says. A couple of white LEDs would be all that was necessary for a backlight, so hardly a major cost burden.
The B431dn comes as standard with USB, Ethernet and legacy parallel connections and the whole machine is easy to set up. There's a two-part drum and toner cartridge, where the toner cartridge clips into the drum that carries it. The whole assembly dropped into place from the top, taking literally seconds to change.
Drivers are provided for Windows and OS X and are available for various Linux distributions. It's also compatible with a wide variety of network protocols.

Входной лоток на 250 листов имеет добавочный откидной – там поместится еще сотня бланков или конвертов. Предусмотрен и второй дополнительный лоток на 530 листов, расположенный снизу.
Панель управления идентична другим из новой линейки цветных принтеров OKI – таким образом, пользователю не нужно приспосабливаться к недавно смененному аппарату. Подсказки двухстрочного 16-символьного ЖК-дисплея будут бонусом, если кто-то сможет прочесть, что он пишет. Расположен под углом в 45 градусов, дисплей не имеет подсветки, а вот его акриловая поверхность является хорошим отражателем – понять появляющийся там текст чрезвычайно трудно.
Пара светодиодов – это единственная подсветка в аппарате, что вряд ли приведет к большим расходам.
B431dn стандартно имеет разъемы для USB и Ethernet, а также традиционные параллельные порты. Машину легко подготовить к работе. Тонер-картридж прикреплен к двухсоставному барабану. Вся конструкция просматривается изнутри, если заглянуть туда сверху, поэтому на смену расходных материалов или другие операции требуется буквально нескольку секунд.
Принтер имеет драйвера для ОС Windows и OS X, может взаимодействовать с Linux. Остается добавить, что он совместим с длинным списком сетевых протоколов.

Mono multi-function printers start at under £200, so what makes the Kyocera Mita FS-1035MFP worth two and a half times that, at just under £500? There are three essential differences from most of the competition, even at the higher price: fast print, a duplex scanner to complement the duplex print engine, and low running costs.
The printer is coloured in high-contrast black and white with a chunky, though compact design. The 50-sheet Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) has a higher profile than many, as it's a full duplex device, with an intermediate tray tucked under the main feed, to take sheets while they're being turned to scan their second sides.
The main control panel runs the full width of the machine and includes 22 quick-dial fax buttons, as well as a complete number pad for fax and PIN entry when printing securely. There's a large, bitmapped, backlit LCD display in the centre of the panel, with a navigation ring and two soft function keys.
Three large, coloured buttons at the right-hand end start, stop and reset tasks and there are also four programmable buttons, which can be set up to perform specific print, scan or copy tasks, with one of them preset to perform an ID card copy, by default.
Slightly awkwardly, underneath the control panel to the right of the page output slot is the power button and next to this a socket for USB drives. The machine can print PDF, XPS and TIFF documents directly, though it can't handle JPEG images. Handily you can also scan directly to PDF.
Below the output slot is a fold down multipurpose tray, which can take up to 50 sheets, and at the bottom of the unit is a 250-sheet main tray. You can add two further trays of the same capacity, giving a total feed capacity of 800 sheets, should you need it.
At the back are sockets for USB and 10/100 Ethernet. Software support is basic, with drivers for printer, scanner and fax. The only consumable is a toner cartridge, which fits into place once you've folded down the front panel, a process which also raises the lid of the printer section of the machine. We found the toner cartridge awkward to locate and lock in place because of the restricted access, but you'll only need to do this every 7,500 pages or so.

Цветной принтер имеет контрастный черно-белый дизайн. Профиль автоматического податчика бумаги непривычно высокий, поскольку это двухстороннее устройство. Оснащен промежуточным лотком (под основным податчиком), куда попадают листы, переворачиваемые для сканирования с другой стороны.
Главная панель управления во всю ширину аппарата включает в себя 22 кнопки для быстрого набора номеров при отправке факсов, а также полную цифровую клавиатуру для факса и PIN-вход для безопасной печати. По центру – большой растровый ЖК-дисплей с подсветкой, навигационным кольцом и двумя мягкими функциональными кнопками.
Три большие цветные кнопки справа – это «Старт», «Стоп» и «Сброс». Есть также четыре программируемые кнопки, которые можно настроить для выполнения специфической печати, сканирования или копирования. По умолчанию одна их них настроена на копирование ID-карты.
Не совсем удачно – под панелью управления, справа от выхода готовых документов – размещена кнопка «Питание», возле которой находится разъем для USB-накопителей. Аппарат печатает документы, сохраненные в форматах PDF, XPS и TIFF – но только не любимый всеми JPEG! Однако удобно то, что результаты сканирования можно сохранять непосредственно в формате PDF.
Ниже лотка выхода расположен раскладной универсальный лоток, который вмещает до 50 листов, а в нижней части устройства имеется основной лоток на 250 листов. При необходимости можно добавить еще два лотка такой же вместимости, что позволяет загрузить в общей сложности сразу 800 листов.
Сзади устройство имеет гнезда USB и 10/100 Ethernet. Прилагаемое программное обеспечение – это стандартные драйвера для принтера, сканера и факса. Чтобы достать или поместить на место тонер-картридж, требуется сложить переднюю панель. При этом также поднимается крышка принтера. В принципе, вставлять картридж довольно неудобно, поскольку внутри устройства пространства совсем мало. Однако это понадобится не часто – один раз на каждые 7,5 тыс. страниц.
