Source text - English To sail across Europe had been a day-dream with me. But, somehow, it did not seem possible; not that it could not be done - two Englishmen did it in the early part of this century - but I had no money and had to stick to my job. I expect most of us are in that position. A little devil kept telling me to chuck my job and follow my bent. 'You're only going to live once!' said the devil.
'Hear! Hear!' said the Crew (she was not the Crew then),
'what's the use of having a good time when you're seventy?'
'But people don't do such things!'
'Some do,' said the Crew.
She hauled out the atlas again. 'Look! We start here in Holland . . . up the Rhine, Hungary, Serbia — and think of Bulgaria! Roumania… the Black Sea!'
I saw the Black Sea again, when we were flying high over the Russian fleet off Sebastopol. What wonderful days! I never can withstand an atlas. And Chicago that day was a blast furnace, breathless, sticky, with dust and newspapers swirling down the streets…
'I wonder— I mused as the devil talked in my ear; 'of course we could buy a boat, a little cabin, yawl or something like that. There would be no hotel bills to pay, and no railways . . . How much have we got in the bank? Lord! is that all?'
But we had our good time instead of waiting till seventy.

Translation - Italian Navigare attraverso l’Europa fu per me un sogno ad occhi aperti. In qualche modo non mi parve possibile: non che non potesse essere fatto, due inglesi lo fecero all’inizio di questo secolo, ma non avevo soldi e avevo un lavoro che mi teneva occupato. Credo che la maggior parte di noi siano in questa situazione.
Un diavolo continuava a dirmi di buttare via il lavoro e seguire la mia inclinazione. “Si vive una volta sola!” diceva il diavolo.
“Senti, senti!” disse la signora della Ciurma (a quel tempo non lo era ancora),
- Che senso ha divertirsi quando avrai settanta anni?
- ma le persone non fanno queste cose!
- alcuni lo fanno, disse la Ciurma.
Tirò fuori l’atlante un’altra volta. “Guarda! Iniziamo qui, dall’Olanda… e poi lungo il Reno, l’Ungheria, la Serbia e anche la Bulgaria! Romania… il Mar Nero!”
L’ultima volta che vidi il Mar Nero fu quando volammo sopra Sebastopoli e la flotta russa. Che giorni meravigliosi! Non riesco mai a resistere ad un atlante, e quel giorno Chicago era una fornace, irrespirabile e appiccicosa, con polvere e giornali che turbinavano per le strade…
“Mi domandavo – e riflettevo mentre il diavolo mi parlava all’orecchio. Certo che possiamo prendere una barca, una piccola cabina, una iole o qualcosa di simile. Non ci saranno da pagare hotel o treni… Quanto abbiamo in banca? oh Signore! Tutto qui?
Alla fin fine ce la siamo goduta invece che aspettare i settanta anni.

My name is
Michele Pisano and I am an Italian freelance translator. I provide quality Italian
translations and proofreading from English and Arabic (Lebanese/Palestinian and
Moroccan dialect). Although I have little experience as a
certified translator, I have been working as English teacher in the Italian
high schools for over 8 years.
Fluent in English and Arabic I also spent some time in Arab countries (Morocco, Lebanon, Tunisia).
