Bio
Hello!  I'm Rebecca Capowski, a Japanese-to-English translator with over 11 years of professional experience specializing in scientific, medical & pharmaceutical, business & marketing, and gaming translation.

I have a Bachelor of Science in Earth Science, an Associate degree in Business Management, and JLPT N1 certification.  I'm also on track to obtain CompTIA A+ IT certification this summer, and I've completed certification in medical transcription and terminology.  I have years of experience in MTPE and editing AI translations on memoQ, Memsource, Matecat, Wordbee, and other platforms.

My work experience is extensive, so I've grouped my past projects by specialty.

SCIENTIFIC:

I've translated literally hundreds of scientific studies across many fields.  I have a Bachelor degree in geology and earth science, but my hands-on experience for my STEM degree has enabled me to translate work in many other disciplines: environmental science, energy, materials science, computing & information science, psychology & social science, and more.

(Of course, I've also worked extensively in my concentration, covering seismology, geomorphology, geochemistry, hydrology, energy exploration, renewable energy, disaster preparedness, and other practical and societal applications.)

I've also translated institutional press releases, equipment & software manuals, and public-facing info such as tour brochures for a geopark.

My clients have included United Nations agencies (progress reports on initiatives; JAXA (equipment manuals); the Japan Meteorological Agency (press releases on new discoveries); and numerous professors, scholars, and universities.

MEDICAL & PHARMACEUTICAL:

As mentioned, I've completed certification in medical transcription and terminology.  I've translated dozens of patient reports; studies in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and sociology; protocol documents & manuals; patient surveys; labor market surveys; and more.  I've worked for numerous hospitals across Japan, and I've been trained in HIPAA and other confidentiality protocols.

My most expansive medical project was a multi-month project translating studies, reports, informed consent documents, fact sheets, and documentation generated in the course of an investigational new drug (IND) study by a global pharmaceutical manufacturer.

BUSINESS, MARKETING, & E-COMMERCE:

For years, I worked with Amazon on an MTPE project translating store listings and optimizing product copy.  My experience in e-commerce, retail, and marketing ranges from product listings for fashion retailers and magazines to press releases for a technological art collective to PowerPoints on a beverage manufacturer's environmental initiatives to visitor brochures and attraction info from a prefectural board of tourism.

On the internal side, I've translated news reports, financial reports, internal company reports and documents, press releases, and much more.  I have an Associate degree in Business Management, and I've also translated dozens of business & scientific studies in the fields of computing & information science, materials science, psychology & social science as it pertains to consumer behavior, engineering, and other disciplines adjacent to business & manufacturing.

GAMING:

I have worked with Sega, Bandai Namco, Square Enix, NetEase, and other publishers in translating and editing scripts & supporting material for MMOs, RPGs, visual novels, platformers, sports titles, mobile games, and much more.  I have years of experience with collaborative CAT software such as memoQ and Memsource, and my business & marketing experience makes me an excellent choice for translating the promotional material generated in the process of a game's release.  Titles on which I have worked include:

As part of the script translation team:
  • Sand Land (Bandai Namco; sci-fi manga-inspired RPG)
  • Phantasy Star Online 2 (Sega; fantasy/sci-fi MMORPG)
  • the Klonoa Phantasy Reverie collection (Bandai Namco; classic platformers)
  • Relayer (Dragami Games; sci-fi strategy + visual novel)
  • an upcoming sports title based on one of the world's most popular manga
  • an upcoming fantasy RPG from one of the genre's premier studios
  • numerous mobile titles

On supporting translation (VA directions, staff documentation):
  • Rusty Rabbit (NetEase; sci-fi exploration platformer)
  • Star Ocean: The Divine Force (Square Enix; fantasy/sci-fi RPG)

From my extensive work in scientific and medical translation, I understand the importance of and duty a translator has regarding confidentiality.  I will not disclose confidential information about your game!

Subtitling: I've been trained Netflix's subtitling practices and am ready to go on that platform—no extensive onboarding needed.

AI experience: I have years of post-editing AI/LLM translations, both on a weekly e-commerce project and for other clients, and I'm well-versed in memoQ, Memsource, Matecat, WordBee, and other MTPE and CAT platforms.  I've also worked with numerous AI firms in evaluating AI translations from a variety of perspectives.

Confidentiality: From medical records to patents to gaming projects, I've worked with a wide variety of material requiring sensitive handling and strict confidentiality.  I will abide by any deletion protocols.  I will not leak your project or confidential info.

I'm available for testing, so please feel free to get in touch about your project.  Thank you!
