Source text - English The revolutionary Japanese component manufacturers emerged as a serious challenger to Campagnolo in the 1970s and went on to threaten the Italian company’s domination of the component market over the next two decades.
In 1973, at the world road race championships, when Shimano was on the brink of its first success, the Italian cycle component manufacturer, Campagnolo, allegedly “stitched” up its Japanese rival. By the early 1970s, Campagnolo had established a virtual stranglehold on the professional cycling scene by offering a complete “groupset,” or gruppo, that performed well and was reliable.
Competitors such as Stronglight and Universal had fallen away, beaten by the excellence of the innovative Vicenza company’s wares. Poised to establish complete dominance, Campagnolo was confronted by a new opponent that, although unused to the Europe-centred world of professional road racing, had a long tradition of making high-quality cycle parts. Indeed, Shimano, the apparent upstart, had a longer company history than Campagnolo, having been founded in 1921—almost a decade before the Italian concern.
