Indonesian to English: The Risk for Passive Smoker General field: Other Detailed field: Medical: Health Care
Translation - English Passive smoker usually inhales smoke which comes from cigarette and also smoke from active smoker. Becoming passive smoker actually has made someone become a smoker without being realized. Usually passive smoker is someone who is at home, work place and other public places such as a bar.
To see how big is a passive smoker is exposed to cigarette smoke, can be tested by measuring nicotine, cotinine and carbon monoxide level in blood, saliva or urine. Cotinine is a product of nicotine metabolism in the body.
More than 4.000 chemical substances are found in cigarette smoke. At least 250 are hazardous substances and 50 substances among them which causes cancer are found in a cigarette.
The chemical substance such as arsenic (toxic heavy metal), benzene (chemical substance in kerosene), beryllium (toxic metal), cadmium (metal which is used for battery), ethylene oxide (chemical substance to sterilize medical equipment), vinyl chloride (toxic substance to make plastic)and other substances.
As reported by National Cancer Institute, international agency for cancer research (IARC) has clarified cigarette smoke on human as carcinogen (substance which causes cancer). Therefore a person who does not smoke but often inhales cigarette smoke also has the possibility to get lung cancer.
It is assumed that someone who becomes passive smoker has the possibility to get lung cancer between 20 to 30 percent. But if a passive smoker lives with an active smoker thus the possibility gets bigger. Because there is possibility that the person is exposed to cigarette smoke everyday, so that the accumulation of the chemical substances gets bigger.
Other researches show that cigarette smoke is not only cause lung cancer, but also breast cancer, nasal sinus cavity cancer, leukemia, lymphoma and brain tumor on children. But further research still need to be done to know the correlation with these cancers.
