Dicen también que era bebedor: un par de veces al año se encerraba en el cuarto del mirador y emergía a los dos o tres días como de una batalla o de un vertigo, pálido, trémulo, azorado y tan autoritario como antes. Recuerdo los ojos glaciales, la enérgica flacura, el bigote gris. No se daba con nadie; es verdad que su español era rudimental, abrasilerado. Fuera de alguna carta commercial o de algún folleto, no recibía correspondencia.
Translation - English To make up for these deficiencies the Englishman worked as hard as his labourers. They said he was strict to the point of cruelty, but scrupulously fair. They also said he was a drinker; a few times a year he would lock himself inside the watchtower and emerge two or three days later, looking as if he had just fought a battle or had an attack of vertigo - pale, shaky, bewildered and just as authoritarian as before. I remember him as an energetic, skinny man, with ice-blue eyes and a grey moustache. He didn’t have much to do with anybody; his Spanish was basic and full of Brazilianisms. Apart from the odd brochure or leaflet, he didn’t receive any post.
