Magyarország 1999. március 12-én csatlakozott a NATO-hoz (Észak-atlanti Szerződés Szervezete, North Atlantic Treaty Organization). Ennek eredményeként, illetve a 2004. május elsején bekövetkező Európai Unióba (EU) történő belépésünket követően hazánk geopolitikai helyzete, biztonsága alapvetően megváltozott, megerősödött. Egy új dimenzió nyílt meg előttünk, a világ meghatározó katonapolitikai és gazdasági központjának részévé váltunk. A NATO és az EU között szoros együttműködés alakult, amelynek alapja a két szervezet közötti stratégiai partnerség erősítése. A Magyar Köztársaság polgárai ma lényegesen kedvezőbb biztonsági helyzetben vannak, mint akár néhány évvel ezelőtt, hiszen hazánkat az elkövetkezendő évtizedben hagyományos katonai eszközökkel végrehajtott agresszió nem fenyegeti. Ugyanakkor a huszonhat tagállam a leghatékonyabb eszközökkel, a legmegfelelőbb felkészítéssel képes csak felvenni a harcot az új típusú fenyegetések ellen. A NATO az európai stabilitás legfontosabb tényezője, és a belátható jövőben az egyetlen olyan szervezet, amely képes katonailag garantálni tagjainak védelmét. Ugyanakkor a szövetség, illetve az Európai Unió tagjaként határainktól távoli régiók is közvetlenül érintik a magyar érdekeket.
Hungary has joined the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) on the 12th of March 1999. As a result of this, and following our May 1st 2004 accession to the European Union (EU) our country’s geopolitical situation and security has fundamentally changed and strengthened. A new dimension has opened up before us; we have become part of the world’s determining military policy and economic centre. Between the NATO and the EU a close co-operation has been formed, which is based on strengthening the strategic partnership between the two organizations. Today the citizens of the Hungarian Republic are in an essentially more favourable security situation than just a few years before, as in the following decade our country is not threatened by aggression executed by traditional military means. At the same time, the twenty-six countries can only fight new types of threats with the most efficient means and the most appropriate training. NATO is the most important factor of European stability and in the foreseeable future the only organization that can provide military warranty for the defence of its members. On the other hand, being a member of the Alliance and the European Union, regions falling far from our borders can now be a concern for Hungarian interests, too.
