I run a freelance translation business under the trade name DOETS and specialize in German to English technical translations for, among others, the manufacturing, mechanical engineering, automotive, aerospace, energy, medical instruments and software industries. I also provide a fully comprehensive editing, revision and proofreading service for English texts.

I have a wealth of experience in a wide range of technical fields gained over 10 years as an in-house technical translator at the translation agencies Star UK Limited, Guildford and Prologos Sprachendienste Gbr, Cologne, Germany. I have also worked as an editor of translations at Bayer AG Corporate Communications, Handelsblatt, Framfab, Haarmann Hemmelrath Management Consultants and MWK Marketing agency.

Backround: 

I grew up in Chicago, Illinois and later lived in Palo Alto, California in the early 1970s.

In 1976, I moved to Fredericton, New Brunswick, then to Kingston, Ontario in 1980 and in 1987 studied at the University of Ottawa, graduating in 1991 with a B.A. General in Business Administration, German language and German history (pre-1914).

After graduation, I moved to Oxford, England to train as an English Language Teacher and teach at the Oxford Academy. On completion of my RSA Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language to Adults (TESOL) in 1993, I moved to the Cologne/Bonn area of Germany to teach English, which included teaching the Members of the German Parliament in the English language programme run by the Bundestag in Bonn. I regularly returned to Oxford during the summer months to teach English to the many interesting foreign students studying there.

In 1998, I moved into translation when I worked as a freelance translator on projects ranging from book translation (300-page World Atlas, children's books) and language learning multimedia CD-Roms through to advertising copy for "eppi" trade magazine for the promotional products industry. By 2000 I was a full-time translator and journalist working for Handelsblatt as an Online Editor in the financial sector. In 2003, I was translating business plans for start-up companies which were spun off by the Fraunhofer Society such as Com.meD, Smartphone Inc. 

In 2005 I began working full-time at a technical translation agency in Cologne, all the while gaining further technical translation competence in the German language. It was during this period that I was given the role as English Editor for Employee Communications in the Corporate Communications Department at the Bayer AG headquarters in Leverkusen, Germany for five months. 

In 2006 at Taschen Verlag, I copy-edited the books Graphic Design Now!, Illustration Now!, Brand Identity Now!, Advertising Now!, Package Design Now! Logo Design Now! and wrote material about M.C. Echer for publication in an art book. As well, at P&P Verlag, I worked as a freelance journalist/features writer with my own "Knowledge Section" in Rhine Magazine, an English-language expat magazine for the Rhineland.

In 2007, after 14 years in the Cologne/Bonn area of Germany, I moved with my wife and two children to Guildford, England to work for STAR UK Limited, and gained further professional technical translation experience over a period of 6.5 years.

In 2014, I formed DOETS Translation Services and embarked on a successful freelance career in technical transation. 

Security measures: I use professional security software to ensure data protection at all times. My PC is protected against cyber attacks by a VPN network and F-Secure anti-virus software.
