The soil parameters were derived from in-situ piezocone, standard penetration and vane tests as well as the available laboratory testing. The parameters adopted for design are presented in Table 3 and 4. Figure 2 illustrates the available data and the Cu design line selected for the Champlain Clay (both the weathered crust and the soft high sensitivity clay). Figure 3 presents the SPT (N) values available for the Glacial Till at this location. Young’s Modulus (E) for the materials has been determined using the following relationships:
E = 300 x Cu (kPa) for the Champlain Clay; and
E = 1000 x N (kPa) for the Glacial Till (assessed to be of granular nature).
Unconfined Compressive Strength (UCS) testing was carried out on one sample in the vicinity of Bridge 1.58. The sample from borehole B-1-S42-01 at 17.5masl recorded a UCS of 110.7MPa. The rock strength has been observed to vary across the Northern Interchange.
RQD values were measured in boreholes B-1-S42-01 (94% at 17.7masl and 91% at 16.8masl), B-1-S42-02 (45% at 13.9masl and 100% at 12.7masl) and B-1-S42-03 (100% at 15.2masl, 88% at 14.7masl and 94% at 13.9masl).
