Translation - English An important task for future textual studies informed by cultural studies might be, on the basis of cultural documents – thus not ‘only’ literature! -, to demonstrate the interrelatedness of representation, power structures and the construction of identity: this would take the form of an interdisciplinary imagology, which would endeavour to make critical connections with a currently booming Bildwissenschaft or image science. The examination of diverse “representations of self and other”, “stereotypes” and so on, leads, however, to theoretical aporias and so back to the dead-end reached in the second half of the twentieth century by Comparative Imagology, as it was then called. Could it be that Homi Bhabha shows us a way out of this – or is he, in good poststructuralist fashion, the ultimate road block?
The present paper proposes to initiate a critical reanalysis of existing theoretical approaches which could be put to work in textual analysis within cultural studies; for it would appear that the change in collective identity constructs in literary and cultural narratives is not only subject to changes in historical conditions and to subjective factors (such as author perspectives), but also to unconscious strategies which cannot so much to be explained by the socio- and psychodynamics of the perceiver as an ‘individual’ embedded in history as by the pre-existence of collective discursive systems and dynamics, or rather a rhetoric underpinning these. It is in this spirit that the synthesis with Bhabha’s stereotype theory undertaken here will be brought to a temporary conclusion and will lead into an example for analysis which is as rich as it is surprisingly contemporary: the novel Der Amerikamüde by Ferdinand Kürnberger (1821-1879).
