El alcalde de Olmedo, Winston Mieles, fue detenido la noche del domingo por intento de asesinato, según la Policía Judicial de Manabí (PJ).
Lo detuvieron miembros del Grupo de Operaciones Especiales (GOE) y permanece en el Centro de Detención Provisional de Portoviejo.
Su arresto se dio después que tres personas resultaran heridas en una balacera ocurrida el domingo a las 19h00 en el parque central Olmedo.
Según el parte policial, Mieles viajaba en un Vitara verde desde donde se disparó contra una multitud que se reunió para protestar por la presencia de Mieles.
Luego del hecho el alcalde se fue, pero policías del GOE ubicaron el carro en la parroquia Colón en Portoviejo.
También se detuvo a sus acompañantes, Roberto Menéndez y Magno Guerrero, y se hallaron en el carro dos armas de fuego.
El gobernador de Manabí, Hugo Vargas, dijo que enviará policías a Olmedo para imponer orden en ese sitio.
Estos son los disturbios más violentos que se han suscitado desde que el Cabildo de Olmedo fuera ocupado por un grupo de manifestantes que piden la salida de Mieles por cometer presuntas irregularidades.
El estado de las tres personas heridas es estable. El agente fiscal Byron Bello se encarga de este caso.

The mayor of Olmedo, Winston Mieles, was arrested Sunday night on a charge of attempted murder, according to the Policía Judicial (Judicial Police. (PJ)) of Manabí (JP).
He was arrested by members of the Grupo de Operaciones Especiales (GOE)(Special Operations Group (SOG)) and is currently being held in the Provisional Detention Center of Portoviejo.
He was arrested after three people were wounded in a shooting which took place Sunday at 7:00 P.M. in Olmeda's central park.
According to police, Mieles was traveling in a green Vitara from which he fired into a large crowd that had gathered to protest Mieles' presence.
The mayor then fled the scene, but police from the SOG later found the car in the parish of Colón in Portoviejo.
Two passengers, Roberto Menéndez and Magno Guerrero were also arrested. Two firearms were discovered in the car.
The governor of Manabí, Hugo Vargas, said that he will send a detachment of police to Olmeda to restore order.
These are the most violent disturbances that have occurred since the chapter house of Olmeda was occupied by a group of demonstrators asking for the ouster of Mieles for presumed irregularities in his administration.
The three persons wounded in the shooting are in stable condition. Public prosecutor Byron Bello is handling the case.
