Translation - English The cultivation of Western types of orchid began in Japan around 1884. Charmed by their beauty, Waseda University's founder Shigenobu Okuma started growing orchids in a greenhouse and became one of the pioneers in orchid cultivation in Japan.
Inspired by Okuma’s orchids, including oncidium and cattleya, Chiso, a leader in the Kyo-Yuzen style of dyeing, created a series of floral patterns in 1906. Since the Okuma residence was located in Waseda, those patterns were called “The Scent of Waseda.” Kimonos and obi sashes with the patterns created a sensation and became extremely popular.
After a century, this scarf marks a revival of “The Scent of Waseda” -- a beautiful fusion of one of the original designs and a motif inspired by Okuma’s family crest Uraumekenhanabishi, which also embellishes Okuma Auditorium.
