Source text - English As he and the grasshopper were walking along again, they saw a beautiful, big butterfly sitting on a tall, yellow poppy. It was quite still. So Billy said, “That butterfly is asleep. I’m going to put it in my hat and take it home!”
“He is not asleep!” contradicted the grasshopper. ‘He has just waked up! He is waiting for his wings to grow strong, so he can fly. Leave him here in the sunshine. He would be very unhappy if you took him into your house!” The grasshopper hoped way out of sight for this was the very longest speech he had ever made.
“O, please come back, grasshopper!” called Billy, “and tell me, did the butterfly sleep on that flower?”
The grasshopper was beside Billy before he had finished speaking. “No, no!” he replied to Billy’s question. “He slept in the little house that he made for himself before he went to sleep!” The grasshopper looked at an empty cocoon hanging from a twig of a tree.
“Is that his house?” asked Billy, looking at it very curiously, for he had never seen anything like it before. The grasshopper nodded his head and winked one eye.
Just then the butterfly began to move his beautiful yellow and black wings up and down very, very slowly.
“Thank you for leaving me out in the sunshine,” said the butterfly, “I want to fly up to the blue sky very much indeed and, if I wait and work my winds, they will grow stronger and then I shall be able to fly ever so high.”
Billy sat down on a stone and the grasshopper perched on a blade of grass.
“Did you know how to fly before you went to sleep?” asked Billy.
“O, dear no!” replied the butterfly. “I was only a caterpillar and had to creep along the earth or on cabbage leaves.”
“Only a caterpillar!” gasped Billy. “Then where did you get those wings?”
“They grew in the night,” answered the butterfly, “while I was asleep.”
At this the grasshopper began to laugh. He laughed so hard, he had to hold his sides.
“Why are you laughing, Grasshopper?” asked Billy indignantly.
The grasshopper did not answer him, but said, “Butterfly, do you know how long you slept in that little house you made for yourself when you were a caterpillar?”
“How long?” asked the butterfly, who had been working his wings up and down all this time.
“Many days and many nights, all through the cold winter. The wind rocked you in your little cradle-house; the rain kept your house nice and soft; and now, today, the warm, spring sun has waked you up and soon you will fly!”
Translation - Spanish
Empezaron a caminar de nuevo hasta que vieron una mariposa grande y bonita, sentada en una amapola alta y amarilla. Como estaba muy quieta, Billy dijo -¡Esa mariposa está dormida! ¡La voy a meter en mi sombrero y me la voy a llevar a casa!
-¡No está dormida! -le replicó el saltamontes-. ¡Se acaba de despertar! Está esperando a que sus alas se fortalezcan para poder volar. Déjala aquí al sol. ¡Se pondría muy triste si te la llevaras a casa! Y, sin más, el saltamontes dio tal salto que desapareció de la vista, porque ése fue el discurso más largo que había pronunciado en su vida.
-¡Ay, por favor, vuelve, saltamontes! -le gritó Billy-, y dime, ¿estaba la mariposa durmiendo en esa flor?
Y antes de que Billy terminara de hablar, el saltamontes ya se volvía a encontrar a su lado. -¡No, no! -dijo respondiendo a su pregunta-. ¡Estaba durmiendo en la casita que se había hecho antes de irse a dormir! Entonces, el saltamontes vio un capullo vacío que colgaba de la ramita de un árbol.
-¿Es aquéllo su casa? -le preguntó Billy, mirándolo con mucha curiosidad, pues nunca había visto nada igual. El saltamontes asintió con la cabeza y le guiñó un ojo.
Justo en ese momento, la mariposa empezó a mover muy, muy despacito, de arriba a abajo sus lindas alas de color amarillo y negro.
-¿Por qué no vuelas? -le preguntó Billy-, No te voy a llevar a casa conmigo.
-Gracias por dejarme al sol -le contestó la mariposa-. Tengo muchísimas ganas de volar muy alto para llegar al cielo azul, sólo tengo que aguardar un poco y ejercitar las alas para que se me pongan fuertes y entonces podré volar bien alto.
Billy se sentó en una piedra y el saltamontes se posó en una brizna de hierba.
-¿Sabías volar antes de irte dormir? -le preguntó Billy.
- ¡Ay, no, qué cosas tienes! -contestó la mariposa-. Yo sólo era una oruga que se arrastraba por la tierra o sobre las hojas de las coles.
-¡Una oruga! -exclamó boquiabierto Billy-. ¿Entonces cómo te salieron esas alas?
-Me crecieron por la noche, -respondió la mariposa-, mientras dormía.
En ese instante el saltamontes se empezó a reir. Y tanto se reía que tuvo que sujetarse a los lados.
-¿De qué te ríes, Saltamontes? -le preguntó Billy indignado.
El saltamontes no le contestó, pero dijo -Mariposa, ¿sabes cuánto tiempo has estado durmiendo en esta casita que te construíste cuando eras una oruga?
-¿Cuánto? -preguntó la mariposa, que había estado moviendo las alas sin parar de arriba a abajo.
-Muchos días y muchas noches durante todo el frío invierno. El viento te meció en tu casa camita; la lluvia la mantuvo bien mullidita; y ahora que el cálido sol de primavera ya te ha despertado, ¡pronto empezarás a volar!
