English to Japanese: Brexit: what about currencies? General field: Bus/Financial Detailed field: Finance (general)
Source text - English We have had anticipation on how market's will respond to the outcome of the referendum, that is, panic selling and rising safe-havens on a Brexit, relief and high yielders soaring on a Bremain. But is that simple, really? It could be, on a temporal time frame, with long-lasting effects on the Pound. No matter the outcome, and worse if the result is neck to neck, the UK will end up injured and split after this, and would take some time to heal the wounds. And the Pound will suffer too.
The GBP/USD pair will be reacting to partial results starting at 22:00 GMT, when polls close. The final results then, will be out sometime between midnight and dawn. At this point, the market is pricing in a victory of the "remain" which means that if that side wins, the Pound can advance further, up to 1.5000 against the greenback. A large victory of the "leave" on the other hand, will result in the GBP/USD pair plummeting towards 1.4250 probably, and even down to the 1.4000 region, if the difference is of 10% or more. The bearish momentum in Pound's crosses, will likely extend into the upcoming week.
English to Japanese: Medical: MORE OPTIONS ACROSS A WIDENING HORIZON General field: Medical Detailed field: Medical: Health Care
Source text - English MORE OPTIONS ACROSS A WIDENING HORIZON
The growing popularity of seeking surgery or other medical procedures overseas has been fuelled as of late by a confluence of evolving factors. In the US, it is no secret that health care costs have been steadily on the rise for years. A flurry of recent media coverage in major outlets has cast in stark relief the cost inequities between the US and elsewhere for both simple and complex medical interventions.
In addition to this expanded awareness of lower cost health options beyond borders, travel and hotel accommodations are becoming cheaper and easier to find. Moreover, information technology is now deftly linking prospective patients to a range of health service providers, near and far, and empowering this population to circumvent the legacy medical system and find alternative choices in many different regions.
Translation - Japanese
English to Japanese: Admissibility and weight of evidence General field: Law/Patents Detailed field: Law (general)
Source text - English Admissibility and weight of evidence
Although evidence of information about a particular fact may be admissible, the court will not necessarily believe or act on that evidence.
If the information about a fact is the direct observation of a witness, the court may simply disbelieve the witness. This may occur for a number of reasons. For example, it may have been a long time since the events in question happened, the witness may give confused testimony, or may have some physical incapacity (e.g. poor eyesight) or have some personal inclination or motivation that causes the court to disbelieve their evidence.
More usually, evidence of information given in court will not be 'direct observation' evidence. Instead it will be evidence that suggests, or from which it can be inferred, that a particular fact occurred. In this regard, the weight of evidence of a record can be adversely affected if it is not contemporaneous with the events it documents (i.e. if it is created well after the events it purports to record).
Translation - Japanese
English to Japanese: Post-modern claptrap rules in schools Detailed field: Education / Pedagogy
Source text - English Post-modern claptrap rules in schools
IT is a scandal that Australian education is being held to ransom by a few hundred academics and mid-ranking bureaucrats who prioritise their own careers over the literacy of our children.
The public is rightfully perplexed as to how Australia can pour so much money into education and yet keep hearing that our general literacy is declining.
The anecdotal evidence from employers and universities about poor literacy levels is verified by research. The result of the latest Progress in International Literacy Study showed Australians have the lowest literacy levels of the English-speaking nations surveyed.
And we had more than twice the percentage of students performing "below low" than Canada and the US. What is going wrong?
Quite simply, the academic institutions and state educational departments are largely controlled or influenced by those with career attachments to the "whole language" methodology.
It focuses on reading being acquired naturally, as with speech, rather than being taught systematically as a code to unlock sounds and structures. Phonics is not given the central focus and children are encouraged to guess words based on the context or pictorial clues.
Translation - Japanese
English to Japanese: Mental health revision in Australia General field: Medical Detailed field: Government / Politics
Source text - English Mental health revision tipped to cause rise in work claims
Australia is set for a sharp rise in workplace mental health claims because of changes in how mental illness is defined, workplace experts and psychiatrists fear.
The symptoms needed for diagnosis of some conditions will be expanded when the controversial Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) - known as the ''psychiatrists' bible'' - is released next month.
Psychiatrists and psychologists the world over have criticised the changes because they risk causing increases in unnecessary treatment and mis-labelling people. But the effect of the changes on workers' compensation cases and workplace legal disputes could be even greater.
Translation - Japanese
