Hi All, I’m quite new to Trados and have now a few times had the problem that Trados (or Word) is changing the formatting in my Word documents during translation. I have been looking through the menus in Workbench but I can’t see how to keep the original formatting. I simply need Trados (or Word) to keep the document as it is and do absolutely nothing with is formatting. Is there anyone who can tell me how to work with Trados this way? Of course, this might be originating from Word in my Office XP, if this is the case I would be really happy to know how to create a work-around in Word in Office XP. Thanks a lot in advance!! Trados (or Word) is changing the formatting in my Word documents during translation. I dont have any bad experiences in this regard (or maybe I have succeeded to igore them;). An example or two would be welcome. Have you tried working with RTF format? It should not make a difference and it is more sturdy and faster than using DOC. Maybe switching to TagEditor would improve the situation, because then the editing tool (i.e. Word) is excluded from the process. Regards Vito | | | To keep the original fonts... | Dec 22, 2007 |

Hi Vito and Mustafa, Thanks for your replies. The documents Im working on are full of coding and the Reveal Formatting feature in Word shows some Direct Coding which I do not know what is. Anyway, my idea now is that this issue might relate to the Normal.dot file used at creation of that document plus maybe a Style Sheet AND on top of that what Mustafa is referring to, that Font feature i Trados. Another idea is that it also relates to Autoformatting of some kind in Word or some mix related to the use of different languages and different Word versions on the document since the font changes are applied in the documents only when the translated segment is saved. Kind of interesting problem:-) Thanks again! Best, Frank Hansen ▲ Collapse | |

Fixing the font setup in Workbench sometimes works but often does not. The only solutions that seem to work consistently are: 1) Translate the document in TagEditor. or 2) Translate in Workbench and then manually reformat the target document after cleanup.

I've noticed this a lot - it's basically when Word doesn't properly recognize the font style of a particular segment of text. This can be due to complex font support, where the segment is defined as bold for asian or complex text, but non-bold for latin. This can be due to complex font support, where the segment is defined as bold for asian or complex text, but non-bold for latin. If your document is large, and you can foresee this kind of problem, it may help to clean up such formatting differences BEFORE translating, if you prefer to work within word (which I do prefer). But if the list of available formatting is as long as the document, then go with TagEditor. For example (using my own formatting definitions for demonstration here!): {CR} {Arial, 12 pt, (Complex) Bold, Auto}This sentence starts out loooking normal non-bolded text and then has a {Arial, 12 pt, Bold, Auto}bold segment {\B}{Arial, 12 pt, Auto}in it, and then continues on as normal.{CR} {CR} After a special operation with this paragraph (such as a Trados macro), it will look like this instead: {Latin, Arial, 12 pt, (Latin) Bold, Auto}This sentence starts out loooking normal, and then has a bold segment{/B}{(Latin) Arial, 12 pt, Auto}in it, and then continues on as normal.{CR} {CR} Which obviously makes no sense, but that's the way Word handles its font-styles. If there's an easy way to fix it, it'll be within Word - but I don't know it, sorry.
