I haven't started learning any entirely new languages since I began translating, but I have improved on a few of the languages I speak which are not working languages.

In the same month that I began my career as a professional translator for English to Portuguese, I started a formal German language course at Goethe-Institut. This was after I spent the last months of my translation education learning this third language by myself.
A few years later I learned Spanish and then, a few more years later, French. Not enough to have excellent writing skills, but quite enough to achieve a higher intermediate level.

As I state on my profile page, I concentrate on just two source languages, German an English. But my knowledge of Spanish and French has helped me a lot with German/English to Portuguese translations, especially when doing terminology research.
I guess I don't have the motivation (or the guts) to take up another language, though. ▲ Collapse

In memoriam
When I was working at the BBC Monitoring Service, they granted two months "sabbatical leave" after 20 years of service and would pay the cost of any work-related study undertaken in the course of it. I took advantage of this to study Spanish full time at a language school in Málaga. But I have never translated professionally from Spanish, though I have managed to earn a few KudoZ points in it.

I was in the RAF at the time, living in Cologne for two years, and took evening classes at the RAF station. I work in it for a firm for which I do patent abstracts, originally in Russian, but they stopped doing Russian and asked what other languages I had. So I tentatively said German, and have been doing German patent abstracts for them regularly for several years now. I know they have technical staff who check the abstracts, so I am willing to work for them, but I have not so far been prepared to do it for anyone else. ▲ Collapse

Strictly, those are supposed to be domains, not languages!

I use free time to improve my second language - Chinese. It's not completely new for me since I studied it at university.

I've been studying Portuguese for some time now, so I answered "yes".
Then I reread the question and noticed it asked whether we've "learned" any new languages. Unfortunately, I've still got a long way to go before I can say I've learned the language.
And by the way, Portuguese is an incredible language. I've been to Brazil several times, but I'd also love to visit Portugal in the near future.

...I voted yes, but I actually haven't been a translator long enough to learn another language properly. I did do a year of Welsh (to get acquainted with the language of my homeland - needless to say, I only learnt a few expressions!), and I'm currently learning LSE - Spanish Sign Language, I'm in my second year and I intend to finish the whole course, it's really interesting! When I finish that I'll move on to something else (there's so much to choose from I don't know where to start! ... What degree of mastery you are talking about?
Just get pidgen about your supposedly third or fourth language(s)?
Get the mastery of one foreign language is quite a challenge by itself, once hooked there, all I need is to perfect it.
I don't know about you, but to me this question is quite quizzical and pointless at best.

A year and a half ago I did the first part of a Quechua course and loved it, but it was pretty intense and with work+kids+studying, it was the first to go. I would love to finish, and possibly even be able to work with Quechua. Many people here are bilingual (Quechua-Spanish), but the vast majority lack the skills to translate or interpret.
