Spanish term

00 jon 111 jon 12

Spanish to English Other Other Mexican slang
I was interpreting for a man from Mexico who was giving me a Report number: 2014-05-12-0022
But he said in Spanish 2014 jon or yon, not sure, 05 jon, 12 jon. When I tried to clarify he got very upset and said that I needed to learn Spanish and indicated that jone is "dash" or space. I may have to learn Spanish, but to me he was just a jerk. Is it true that jon means dash in Mexican Spanish? anyone?

Thank you
Tammy

Thanks, Alejandro.

@tammy Don't worry Tammy. As I said, in my agreement to DLyons suggestion, though I am not Mexican I live there and I have not heard any single person pronounce guión as jon or yon. Very special " kind" man you had to deal with. :)
Alejandro Alcaraz Sintes Sep 25, 2014:
@Phil guión - hyphen
raya, semimenos – n-dash
raya larga — m-dash
Así los llamo yo, pero: http://www.wikilengua.org/index.php/Guion. Martínez de Sousa es una autoridad en ortotipografía.

Collins says both hyphen and dash for guión. Does Spanish not make a distinction between the two?

Note from asker:
Exactly that is what I told him, do you mean guion, or raya? but he was adamant, and I thought that may be in Mexico there was such a word. But with all your answers I realized that he did not know what he was talking about. Thank you all for your answers, it was very helpful.

Thanks Helena. Happens easily.
agree philgoddard : You can tell him from us he's a jerk:-)

Thanks Phil. He might just be sensitive about a perfectly normal Mexican accent.
agree Alejandro Alcaraz Sintes : Parece de chiste.

Gracias Alejandro.
agree Judith Armele : I live in Mexico and though I am not Mexican I can assure you that I have not heard any Mexican pronounce guión as Jon... He must have a very special pronounciation. Not normal Mexican accent. :)

Thanks Judith. Perhaps from coyboy movies, Mexican Spanish sounds less accented to me than most varieties :-)
agree Andy Sudron : a badly pronounced guión perhaps

Sounds like he might have been a mumbler, saying "guión," which is the actual word for "hyphen." I don't know that I would have caught that either, being that it's so unusual to use punctuation in speech. Anyway, whenever you work with the public, there will always be the occasional rude person. Just stay true to your own professionalism, and don't be afraid to be honest and ask for clarification when you don't know something. There is always something to learn!
