Spanish term

Baciliformes

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general)
In a white blood cell count. Spanish from Chile. Bacilliform is used for bacteria, my guess here is band cells, but help would be appreciated :-)

Discussion

Thanks for the context; this really helps!
Jeff Steffin (asker) May 15:
Here is the context, there is not anything else unfortunately, it's grouped in with myelocytes and metamyelocytes.

Context? Could they mean ¨basófilos¨?

band neutrophils

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&opi=8997844...

Desviación a la izquierda: formas inmaduras o jóvenes del neutrófilo (cayados, metamielocitos, mielocitos), lo que puede observarse en infecciones graves, síndromes mieloproliferativos o invasión de la médula ósea

An elevated WBC count with segmented neutrophils as well as more immature band neutrophils and even metamyelocytes suggests more severe inflammation or infection driving accelerated release of myeloid cells from the bone marrow. This is known as a 'left shift'.

Sorry, Jeff. I just noticed your own suggestion as "band cells". That is correct; these are just different names for the same cells: band cells, band neutrophils, stab cells.

Band neutrophils
Aka stab cells
https://www.thebloodproject.com/band-neutrophil/

Band cell
a young neutrophil in the stage of development following a metamyelocyte and having an elongated nucleus that has not yet become lobed as in a mature neutrophil.
Called also stab cell

Neutrofilia

agree Giovanni Rengifo : They're also called "abastonados" / You may have seen "cayados" instead.

Gracias, Giovanni; tiene sentido aunque nunca lo había oído antes.//Yes, that's what we use here; cayados (as in the second link above).
agree Isabelle Villancher : "The nucleus of a less mature neutrophil will not be separated but will have a rod-like “band” shape." And bacilli = rods

Yeap. Thanks!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you, this is what I had thought, but wanted to confirm, indeed it was band neutrophils (cells), but was unfamiliar with the Chilean variant of baciliformes, as I had not heard it before. In Spain and most of Latin America, it's cayados."

baciloide

In the context of white blood cell count, "bacilliform" may refer to the shape or appearance of white blood cells. White blood cells, or leukocytes, are a diverse group of cells that play a crucial role in the body's immune response. They come in various shapes and sizes, including bacilliform, which means resembling bacilli, which are rod-shaped bacteria. When analyzing a blood sample, the appearance of white blood cells can provide important diagnostic information about potential infections or immune system disorders

disagree Giovanni Rengifo : It's true, "baciloide" is definitely not an English word.

Background: Neutrophil nuclei in rodents may mature by ring formation. These cells are called ring neutrophils or doughnut cells.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Giovanni Rengifo : It's not about the shape of the nucleus, but rather the rod shape of the cells themselves.

neutral Chema Nieto Castañón : Giovanni is not right here; it is actually about the shape of the nucleus. But these band neutrophils have C or S shaped nuclei -which motivates its name (band cell; cayado, baciliforme, "abastonado"). Last ref is good, liz; "band (neutrophil) count"

Note from asker:
Sorry for any confusion, the term is just that: "baciliformes". There is no sentence, it's just a blood count.
Peer comments on this reference comment:

agree Chema Nieto Castañón : Los neutrófilos inmaduros displásicos de tus refs tienen núcleos "anulares": "ring-shaped"; "baciliformes anulares". Los baciliformes tienen habitualmente núcleos con forma de "cayado"; con forma de C (o como una "L" de líneas abombadas) o de S.
