Medical (general)
In a white blood cell count. Spanish from Chile. Bacilliform is used for bacteria, my guess here is band cells, but help would be appreciated :-)

band neutrophils

An elevated WBC count with segmented neutrophils as well as more immature band neutrophils and even metamyelocytes suggests more severe inflammation or infection driving accelerated release of myeloid cells from the bone marrow. This is known as a 'left shift'.

Sorry, Jeff. I just noticed your own suggestion as "band cells". That is correct; these are just different names for the same cells: band cells, band neutrophils, stab cells.
Band neutrophils
Aka stab cells

Band cell
a young neutrophil in the stage of development following a metamyelocyte and having an elongated nucleus that has not yet become lobed as in a mature neutrophil.

Neutrofilia

: "The nucleus of a less mature neutrophil will not be separated but will have a rod-like “band” shape." And bacilli = rods

Comment: "Thank you, this is what I had thought, but wanted to confirm, indeed it was band neutrophils (cells), but was unfamiliar with the Chilean variant of baciliformes, as I had not heard it before. In Spain and most of Latin America, it's cayados."

baciloide
In the context of white blood cell count, "bacilliform" may refer to the shape or appearance of white blood cells. White blood cells, or leukocytes, are a diverse group of cells that play a crucial role in the body's immune response. They come in various shapes and sizes, including bacilliform, which means resembling bacilli, which are rod-shaped bacteria. When analyzing a blood sample, the appearance of white blood cells can provide important diagnostic information about potential infections or immune system disorders

: It's not about the shape of the nucleus, but rather the rod shape of the cells themselves.

Chema Nieto Castañón
: Giovanni is not right here; it is actually about the shape of the nucleus. But these band neutrophils have C or S shaped nuclei -which motivates its name (band cell; cayado, baciliforme, "abastonado"). Last ref is good, liz; "band (neutrophil) count"
