Spanish term

cargos directos

Spanish to English Social Sciences Human Resources
Según las estadísticas, en el sector de la cultura la presencia de mujeres en cargos directos es menor que la de los hombres."

This is an example given of an indicator on the success or otherwise of public/private measures taken to better cater to diversity in the cultural field. It's a standalone sentence. Apart from introducing that it's apoint to note.
The body of the text talks about policies, and indicators, but doesn't dwell on women (or "cargos") as such, and then goes on to talk about other indicators related to culture in general.

So am I wrong to think that this may relate to "leadership positions" (e.g. within companies, jobs, projects, organizations, etc) or is this a specific term to refer to something else? I've seen others (mainly native Spanish speakers) translate it as "direct positions" but this makes me think of direct (vs indirect) jobs.

Help appreciated to clarify if this may be a coined term in the inequality/diversity sphere, or if a relevant term in the social/cultural/policy/international organization and relations/etc. fields exists (in English, perhaps inclined towards UK/EU but open to suggestions from across the pond too).

Thanks in advance!

Appreciate you getting back to us about this, B.

CLIENT RESPONSE Though the term has been used with the spelling in other contexts, the client (who is not the original writer of this particular text) opted for changing it to cargos directivos.
B.Translations (asker) May 16:
Interestingly this document (from Spain) talks about cargos directos (del consejo de empresas), cargos directivos & puestos directivos. Can't deduce if they are making a distinction between just a leadership role and the members of a (company) board for example...

In this sentence they seem to make a distinction: "desigualdad de género en el mercado laboral se traduce en que se observa una reducida presencia de las mujeres en los puestos directivos de las empresas, problema que se acentúa si se consideran los niveles más altos de la jerarquía profesional." My reading is that it's about a problem of women in "leadership positions" that gets accentuated if (even) higher (leadership?) positions are taken into account. So that would imply leadership in general with the term "puestos directivos" (e.g. a department manager in a company is also a leadership role). Then a higher/st level would be the board of directors (in a company, organization, association etc). When they use "cargos directos" it's specific to "consejo" (board).

maybe a LatAm variant Thank you! "Cargos directivos" would have made total sense. Will ask the writer if it's an error or a specific meaning, though with that Mexican article link and "cargos directos" I've seen in other (Chilean government agency, for example) documents, might be a LatAm variant on the same concept.
philgoddard May 16:
Yes I reckon that's it.
Robert Carter May 16:
Possible typo... Does it appear more than once in your text? If not, perhaps it should be "cargos directivos"? "Cargos directos" seems kind of meaningless to me.
I just found it in this context here in this headline:
https://www.periodismoyambiente.com.mx/2024/03/10/un-63-de-e...
but then in the text of the article it never mentions the term, only "puestos directivos."

Yes, it's a typo. It must be cargos directivos.

Note from asker:
I will confirm with the writer, though I've seen it used across various official documents from different countries written exactly as "cargos directos" in similar contexts.
The unesco reference has a french translation, and again through that we come back to spanish for directivos vs. directos. I mention it in case it's not a typo, which it very well may not be.

line functions

Staff and line

Tools
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Staff and line are names given to different types of functions in organizations. A line function is one that directly advances an organization in its core work.[1] This always includes production and sales, and sometimes marketing.[2] A staff function supports the organization with specialized advisory and support functions.[3] For example, human resources, accounting, public relations and the legal department are generally considered to be staff functions.[4] Both terms originated in the military.

Although it may be a typo for 'directivo/a', there is also also a distinction between direct/indirect employment/jobs/positions, so I wouldn't rule it out immediately, especially if it is repeated throughout the source text rather than simply using 'directivo/a/s' across the board.
Example sentence:

Empleos directos son aquellos que están relacionados de forma estrecha a compañías, que esta se encarga de la contratación del persona

Note from asker:
Thanks neilmac! That was what first came to mind. Like the Peruvian article liz posted, "cargos directos altos (CEO)" makes it sound like CEO = high direct position. Still waiting for client reply. Will update accordingly.

Note from asker:
Great liz, thank you! From reading all those, I am inclined to use (senior) executives as most seem to point to higher leadership positions. Will wait for a reply from the client to confirm the intention. Though this article made me doubt the use of executive: https://talentozeus.com/blog/caracteristicas-de-un-director-ejecutivo El CEO no es lo mismo que el presidente, dentro de los corporativos, este último hace referencia a la persona que está a cargo de un segmento o parte crítica de la empresa y no de la compañía en general. Los presidentes ocupan cargos directos como, director de operaciones con vicepresidentes.
