Confidence Limits for the Mean
Purpose:
Interval Estimate for Mean Confidence limits for the mean (Snedecor and Cochran, 1989) are an interval estimate for the mean. Interval estimates are often desirable because the estimate of the mean varies from sample to sample. Instead of a single estimate for the mean, a confidence interval generates a lower and upper limit for the mean. The interval estimate gives an indication of how much uncertainty there is in our estimate of the true mean. The narrower the interval, the more precise is our estimate. - https://www.itl.nist.gov/div898/handbook/eda/section3/eda352...
Althea Draper Feb 24, 2021:
Looking at this paper (page 82) it looks at 'Inferior 95% CL para media' and 'Superior 95% CL para media'. At the bottom of the chart, it states "CL: límite de confianza para la media". In other words, 'Inferior 95% CL para media' and 'Superior 95% CL para media' are the lower and upper confidence interval limits for the mean for a 95% confidence level . Looking at the figures, this seems to be right.

Confidence Interval: How to Find a Confidence Interval: The ...www.statisticshowto.com › probability-and-statistics › c...
***A confidence interval for the mean*** is a way of estimating the true population mean. Instead of a single number for the mean, a confidence interval gives you a lower estimate and an upper estimate. For example, instead of “6” as the mean you might get {5,7}, where 5 is the lower estimate and 7 is the upper.

also, I am unable to find any reference to "superior para media"
Sarah Webb (asker) Feb 24, 2021:
I did see on one document that CI and CL were used interchangeably.
Sarah Webb (asker) Feb 24, 2021:
I'm not sure. It isn't a typo as it appears twice and earlier on in the report, confidence interval is shown as IC95%

Do you mean "CI" = confidence interval?

Lower CI for the mean

agree Althea Draper : Maybe 'lower CI limit for the mean' - see discussion

neutral philgoddard : I know CI is confidence interval, but how do you get this from CL?

Patient’s performance in ADLs lower for median

Patient’s performance in ADLs lower for median (median length of survival or median age depending on your context)

Patient’s performance in ADLs higher for median (median length of survival or median age depending on your context)

Just trying an educated guess: It could be that CL in Spanish stands for capacidad (del paciente) para llevar a cabo tareas cotidianas = Patient’s performance in ADLs. Media could refer to the median age or median length of survival. See references below.

https://initiaoncologia.com/glosario/escala-de-karnofsky/

https://www.altima-sfi.com/es/tanatopedia/indice-de-karnofsk...

The median age was 67 years (27-89), with median length of survival of 147 days. The RPA identified four distinct survival groups (p < .0001) with three variables: KPS, physical well-being, and physical symptom distress. The most significant split was KPS of 50%, followed by physical well-being score of 25 and physical symptom distress score of 0.6.

The Karnofsky Performance Status

The Karnofsky score is a simple and rapid method to assess patients’ performance in ADLs, which has been mostly used in medical oncology. The score has proven useful not only for following the course of the illness, but also for obtaining prognostic information. Patients with the highest (best) Karnofsky scores at the time of tumor diagnosis have the best survival and quality of life over the course of their illness.

The activities of daily living (ADLs) is a term used to collectively describe fundamental skills that are required to independently care for oneself such as eating, bathing, and mobility.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK470404/#:~:text=Introd...

We also plan to assess whether the Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation Comorbidity Index (HCT-CI) and Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) can predict unplanned admissions after adjusting for confounding factors.
Serum creatinine was higher and patients were relatively older in both the planned inpatient (median age, 62 years; range, 33 to 80 years) and unplanned (median age, 59 years; range, 44 to 69 years) admission cohorts compared with the outpatient-only cohort (median age, 57 years; range, 40 to 70 years) (P < .05). Performance status (cohort A: median, 90%; range, 60% to 100%; cohort B: 80%, 50% to 100%; cohort C: 80%, 60% to 100%) was lower (P < .05) and HCT-CI score (cohort A: median, 1.78; range, 0 to 8; cohort B: 2.67, 0 to 9; cohort C: 2.16, 0 to 7) was higher (P < .004) in both inpatient groups compared with the planned outpatient cohort.
