Discussion

Henry Hinds Jan 27, 2009:
That was the thought that came to my mind, which is why I requested CONTEXT.
Michael Powers (PhD) Jan 27, 2009:
It has been confirmed that it is a concentration camp.
franglish Jan 27, 2009:
As Henry has already pointed out, context is needed. Could you spare the time and give us some?
Henry Hinds Jan 27, 2009:
What kind of camp? Very important CONTEXT...

Based on that, I believe "entrance room" would be most appropriate. "reception" would be too cheery and positive for such a terrible fate.

Note from asker:
It is a concentration camp Michael.
Peer comment(s):

agree Ryan Becker : If the context is about a concentration camp, then "reception" would certainly not be appropriate. I believe that "entrance room" would be the best option

Thank you, Ryan - I agree - context is everything - obviously this answer would be for "concentration camps," which I am assuming since it is under history and "camps" are mentioned. "maleta" would not be "suitcase" if I guessed the context - Mike :)

"Camp" is somewhere fairly informal, isn't it, so "reception" would fit the bill.

Hello desertfox,

I have just been thinking, what sort of camp is this?

You say this comes under history, so is it a holiday camp, a camp for refugees, a camp for detainees,,,,

Please enlighten us?

There are various possibilities here:-)

Thank you, though am awaiting desertfox's comments about what type of "camp" this is :-)
agree Kate Major Patience : Yeah, I think reception will best give visitors an idea of what this might be.

arrival lounge or "welcome reception area"

"arrival lounge" is quite formal, as used in airports, I think "welcome reception area" is more inviting to arriving guests. It depends on the tyoe of "camp" you are referring to.

receiving room

In the context of a concentration camp, one of these might be an especially good option. I would definitely avoid the use of "reception" in this context.

Since the context of a concentration camp appears to have been confirmed, and since Jews, in this context, were moved about like chattel (or even herded like cattle), it would make sense (as the links above suggest) that some people might refer to these areas as "receiving rooms" (rather than "welcome lounges" or "reception areas").

I hope this helps!

gatehouse

If this is concerning concentration camps, I'm going to offer up the suggestion that it may be referring to the gatehouse (many camps, including Dachau and Auschwitz, had prominant gatehouses that newly arrive prisoners passed through, and that housed the guards and administrative offices).

The passage seems to refer to the initial processing of arriving prisoners, but to my knowledge, this was usually conducted out of doors. (see this pic: http://z.about.com/d/history1900s/1/0/d/A/prisoner12.jpg)

Depending on which camp it was one could even say "assembly area for new arrivals"
Peer comment(s):

agree Henry Hinds : Appropriate given the CONTEXT. We're not talking about an airport or a hotel here.

Thanks, Henri, that was my impression, too. Theresienstadt is the only camp that would have had an arrival hall, as far as I am aware.
agree Rosa Paredes : Absolutely! Recption or check-in would not work here

Gracias, Rosa!
agree liz askew : I did ask for context but it was not forthcoming, hence all my comments.

Thanks, Liz. Without context one can only guess!
