Spanish term

Padrinos de argollas

Spanish to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters Wedding/Mexico
In a list of wedding participants.

In another item on the list are listed "padrinos de velacion". So this seems to refer to a different set of "godparents".

Thank you.

The problem with translating this and related terms is that the functions are different across cultures. The best one can do, in my opinion, may be to choose approximations that sound natural (instead of creating awkward-sounding calques that no native speaker would ever use). Incidently, I was recently asked (here in Mexico) to be a neighbor`s "padrino de graduación" (but luckily that does not mean I have to pay for the party). :-)

Good luck, Robert!
Peer comment(s):

agree Denise Nahigian : I agree that approximation is the better approach. We have ringbearers, it's just that they're usually children...
