Discussion

Charles Davis May 7, 2015:
Flan (SP) I have never heard this referred to as an egg flan in English. Dictionaries tell me that it is called that in American English, but as far as I'm concerned the term is never used in British English; a flan in Britain is quite a different thing. I don't know about Ireland. What the Spanish call a flan is most often called a creme caramel, as Phil says. There's also egg custard, which is basically the same stuff (I was sometimes given egg custard as a child, usually when I was ill. It never had any caramel on it, unfortunately, and it wasn't made in a nice dinky little individual portion, so I have my doubts about that expression too, for British English.)

Has egg flan been used earlier in the recipe?

neutral philgoddard : Isn't "flan" crême caramel?//Wikipedia says flan in English is "an open pastry or sponge cake containing a sweet or savoury filling".

Same thing, different name. Also called 'egg custard'. Wikipedia is not a food bible, beware. Yes, that is one description of a flan, but there are more. Google 'egg flan' images.
agree Sandra Cirera-García : I prefer the egg flan leftovers option

Thanks, Sandra :)
agree Charles Davis : Ah! Queen of Puddings! My mum made it occasionally. The best ever, if you can get the fruit

Thanks, Charles - we didn't have much egg custard/flan or creme caramel in our house. We had the fancier Queen of Puddings and Pineapple Upside Down Cake :)
agree Helena Chavarria : I've always called it 'crème caramel'.

Thanks, Helena :)
