agree Oleksandr Kolot (X) : Great job! Unfortunately, not many foreigners know Bulgakov and this novel. I think the asker should add a translator's note about this allusion or try to find a similar phrase in English literature.

agree Angela Greenfield : I disagree with Oleksandr, there are more foreigners than he thinks who know Bulgakov. I would just omit "the" before "Customs".
