Dear colleagues!
Please advise.

Sophia Hundt (X) Sep 30, 2006:
Thank you, Henry.
Henry Schroeder Sep 29, 2006:
@Sophia - You are correct. I was gone the whole day and couldn't respond.
Sophia Hundt (X) Sep 29, 2006:
technical question to Jack or another native Eng. speaker - when i think of spread, i think you say it in the context of being spread on some sort of a surface, and it seems to me that here it doesn't fit because it's being unfolded up in the air?
Jack Doughty Sep 29, 2006:
Maybe "He opened up the sheet with a flourish" for your latest suggestion.
Andrew Vdovin (asker) Sep 29, 2006:
Andrew Vdovin (asker) Sep 29, 2006:
Andrew Vdovin (asker) Sep 29, 2006:
You’re right Sophia, he unfolded it in the air with his hands wide apart. I just wonder if it could be put in a nice and short way.
a05 Sep 29, 2006:
agree with Sophia, spread would mean to lay it unfolded on the bed/floor/...
Sophia Hundt (X) Sep 29, 2006:
(meant to be "in each hand")
Sophia Hundt (X) Sep 29, 2006:
...hands spread wide apart. That's what Andrew has in mind when he talks about "the vivid picture", I think.
Sophia Hundt (X) Sep 29, 2006:
Henry - to me "spread" implies "spread on the ground, or some sort of a surface". Is my understanding wrong? (Please tell me if it is). In the meantime, this guy unfolded the sheet while holdling it up in the air (holding the two ends in each hands, ...
Henry Schroeder Sep 29, 2006:
Andrew Vdovin (asker) Sep 29, 2006:

or, as someone else suggests, simply "unfolded".

Andrew - I have to go to Wurzburg now, so I can't wait for a reply.

Don't be deceived! The effect here is temporal, not spacial. But it creates an effect.

neutral Sophia Hundt (X) : doesn't fit here, I don't think.

Actually, forgive me my vanity, but I like 'fold it out' better than 'unfolded,' since unfolded is almost slightly awkward, but that's just to my ear.
