Russian term

из творога крупу сушила

Russian to English Art/Literary Food & Drink
A woman is describing how she used to prepare packages for her husband who was in the Labor Army in 1940s Siberia (the ironic thing is she's happy he's married another and she doesn't have to take the children's food to send to him).

Я детям даже их сто пятьдесят грамм не давала, все на сухари сушила! И мясо в печи высушивала, и из творога крупу сушила.

Drying cottage cheese

Apparently she was drying the cottage cheese to make it similar to groats in order to be able to send it to her husband. To make cottage cheese non-perishable and thus to have it last longer.

agree Natasha Liberman : yes, groats or possibly even grits (hominy) - past tense though :)
