Academic Abstract
This is from an academic abstract entitled "Mudanças na família e a situação das crianças no Brasil:
I'd just like to confirm the correct terminology for the phrase as I've found different terms such as total fertility rate/replacement rate etc. Looking for how best to say it in US English. Thanks for your help!

Discussion
The degree to which a population is replacing itself, based on the ratio of the number of female babies to the number of women of childbearing age. This is the gross reproduction rate. The net reproduction rate is defined as the average number of daughters born to mothers during their reproductive years while allowing for mortality. If the number is over 1, the population will grow, if below 1, the population will diminish.
