Mihaela Roman (asker) Mar 9, 2009:
Mihaela Roman (asker) Mar 9, 2009:

Michael Powers (PhD) Mar 9, 2009:
SAT Exam - Scores and Usage Although true that all high school students are potentially college bound, if they declare themselves college bound to their high school counselors, then they are required to take a more rigurous academic curriculum than those that state they are not.

Technically, you cannot "flunk" or "pass" the SAT. SAT stands for Scholastic Aptitude Test and although historically it consisted of two sections, Math and English, it now has a writing component that is fairly new. Some universities are using the writing component section, and others are not.

Scores on all three sections range from 200 - 800 points, with 200 being the absolute lowest, and 800 being teh absolute highest.

The average score is 500, and 100 point differentials in either direction are 1 standard deviation. Hence, a score of 600 means that the test taker did better than approximately 84% of the students on that test, while 700 means he did better than 98%.

Some colleges and universities do not require the SAT at all, and admit students solely on high school courses and grade.

Others will reject students with a 2200+ score on the SAT, that is the top 1%. Its usage varies greatly.
Marlene Curtis Mar 9, 2009:
Discordo Mike.
Marlene Curtis Mar 9, 2009:
American System All high-school children in the USA are potentially college bound students, there is no descrimination whatsoever. Some students do more poorly what can be overcome by studying hard after graduation and passing the SAT exams.
Michael Powers (PhD) Mar 9, 2009:
Marlene Curtis Mar 9, 2009:
American Sytem Graduating from High School and passing the SAT exams are the pre-requisites to enter university regardless of the subjects the students take at High School. A student can do extremely well at High School and still fail the SAT exams and not go to university.
Michael Powers (PhD) Mar 9, 2009:
Michael Powers (PhD) Mar 9, 2009:
Michael Powers (PhD) Mar 9, 2009:
Clarification on American System I agree with what Marlene is saying and I believe my point was misunderstood. It is absolutely true that students are often in ithe same courses in the US, whether going to college/university of not. The point I was attempting to make is that the number of core academic courses that university-bound or "university-track" high school students need to take is more than those that are not planning on going to the university. It is possible to get a high school diploma without taking the same number of core academic courses that are needed to get into a college or university, but not qualify for entrance into a college or university without taking remedial courses. "Remedial courses" are courses that need to be taken when a student is weak, not "preparatory courses."
Michael Powers (PhD) Mar 9, 2009:
Michael Powers (PhD) Mar 9, 2009:
Michael Powers (PhD) Mar 9, 2009:
Não disse mentira. Conhecó o sistema. Olha o seguinte: "CMA is a progressive college-preparatory school that uses the military model to educate and train ..."
Marlene Curtis Mar 9, 2009:
Marlene Curtis Mar 9, 2009:
American System My childen went to high school here in the USA. There isn't a two-track system, all children take the same course, there isn't a vocational or technical course in high school. The very good students who excel take AP exams which, if they pass, give them college credits, but the courses are all exactly the same. AFTER they finish high school, they can choose to take a preparatory course to take the SAT exams to enter university which has absolutely nothing to do with high school.
Michael Powers (PhD) Mar 9, 2009:
Angolan System similar to US System As described by Marlene, it sounds like the two-track system in Angola is very similar to the two-track system so common in many American high schools. If the US if a student is in the university-track system, he must take a certain number of courses in the academic field, bypically including English, History, Mathematics, Biological Sciences, Social Sciences, etc., in order to meet the qualifications to go on at the university level. In the vocational and/or technical track, there is more of a pramatic emphasis for employability after high school and fewer courses are taken in the traditional academic areas. Although high school also is only three years in the US, after middle school, the coursework to enter the university level actrually st arts counting from 9th grade and hence four years are evaluated.

Based on the two-track system that Marelen so eloquently described, it sounds very similar to the two-track system that we also have in the U.S.: university bound or unviversity-track students, if you will, and those that are not university bound or unviversity-track systems, but rather vocational or technical, just as in the Angolan system.
Michael Powers (PhD) Mar 9, 2009:
"university-track high school" In the US, there are many public high schools, if not most, where students either follow the university track (like my four children and one stepdaughter), or a vocabional track. The two types of courses run parallel also. The university bound students take pre-university bound courses for four years instead of three. It is still high school, but it is "university-track high school." These high schools are not "preparatory schools" but the "university-track curriculum" in many ways parallels the private preparatory schools.
Marlene Curtis Mar 9, 2009:
Pre-University Course The pre-university course is part of a regular high school in Angola. The system is totally different from the American or Brazilian system.
Marlene Curtis Mar 9, 2009:
Pre-University Course In Angola, they have two types of courses running parallel. The university bound students take the three-year Pre-University Course and the non-bound high school students take a technical or vocational course.
Michael Powers (PhD) Mar 9, 2009:
Michael Powers (PhD) Mar 9, 2009:
Preparatory Schools in US are certain high schools In the US, if you go to a preparatory school, it is actually a high school designed to offer mostly advanced courses so that students stand a better chance of having the necessary preparation to get accepted into a prestigious university, but they are still high schools.

I included some links in the explanation to my answer. One of them refers to Culver Mlitary Academy, a well-known preparatory school which is also a high school. This is not only because teh link says it is, but I know first-hand since my brother, one of my sisters and I all studied there.

They are usually different than regular public schools in the sense that they have much more funding and sometiems have campuses that are comparable to those campuses found at small colleges or universities.

However, they are still at teh high school level, even though they include a lot of Advanced Placement tests.

In essence, they are "university-track high schools" or "preparatory schools".
jack_speak Mar 9, 2009:
Se for o segundo, qual pais?

In most countries throughout the world, Angola most likely included, there are different educational tracks depending on the goals of the students. In many cases there are high school level courses that are terminal in nature because a certain vocation or trade is studied, whereas in other cases, usually 10% or fewer, than are the so-called "university-track" courses to preparae for the entry test and eventual studies at the university level.

Jack, in the United Stats a "prep school" or "preparatory school" is a high school designed to send students on to college/university students. I studied at one: Culver Military Academy (see links above). Also, see the definitions of "preparatory school."
neutral Marlene Curtis : Mike, the credits don't make them eligible for college, they give them college credits if they pass the SAT and are accepted by a college. They have to graduate from high school to enter university, but that doesn't make high school auniversity prep school

You are right. It does not make the school a university prep school; however, it makes the specific curriculum the students must take for acceptance the "university-track" curriculum. There are private high schools that definitely are preparatory schools.

Pre-university school

O sítio abaixo explica bem o sistema educacional de Angola.

Angola School education:

Basic education lasts for eight years. Secondary education or Ensino Medio is either a three-year general course or a four-year technical/vocational course culminating in the Habilitaçãos Literárias. There are also two- to three-year specialized pre-university courses running parallely. A reform to be established between 1995 and 2005 foresees a primary education of six years followed by a secondary education of six to seven years, divided into two cycles of three years each for the general course and three and four years for the technical/vocational course

college preparatory school

This might only apply if the school is a private school, as that is the connotation in the U.S. We call them "prep schools" but in fact I haven't researched the term at all, hence my confidence level as "medium"
Peer comment(s):

neutral jack_speak : I agree, but I wouldn't say "college" because in many countries "colegio" is synonymous to high school, so this lends confusion.
