Discussion

JapanLegal Mar 10, 2011:
I actually suggested both, thinking along the lines of Morgan's comment that "just slapped on" is what many people might actually say in describing this kind of look, and that "afterthought" is perhaps the closest thing to a direct translation that you can get.

I also agree that "afterthought" might be a touch more formal/polite (which did you mean?), but I think that in most situations where this idea is being expressed, either one would be perfectly appropriate. For example, no one would bat an eyelash if I wrote the following sentence in a business email: "XYZ-san told me that it looked like it had just been slapped on; he wants us to rethink the design." I do think that perhaps the sentiment expressed by "slapped on" is stronger than that of "afterthought," so Morgan was 100% right to say that the proper choice will depend on the context and the message that the text is trying to convey.

I have no problem with Shannon's suggestion, but my first idea was 'afterthought' too. I was going to post it as an answer until I noticed that Morgan had already posted as a suggestion.

The Galactic 41 and Crono Galactic are nothing more than the Cockpit and Chrono Cockpit with BO1 bezels slapped on them, no? That 4 section dial is from the 2009 Chrono Cockpit and the dial of the 41 is the same(mostly) as the Cockpit. So basically it's a different bezel and they call it a new range?

Never seen one up close but I don't know if it's as bad as it looks. I've heard about fitment issues on the OLDER versions but never heard a complaint about the feel of them. It's probably just the fact that it looks sort of plain without everything in. I think once it was in with all the hardware it would look better. I've seen sheetmetal slapped on some dashes that looked WAY worse.

Your concept is cool, to improve on it, I would have the back of the car and top look like it's coming out of the "cloud", to keep it looking like a render that was just slapped on top.

You might also say that it looks like an afterthought.

References for the "afterthought" version follow. The idea is that the look of the part or feature is not well-integrated into the rest of the design:

The hanging exhaust looks like an afterthought
You should go with the M Technik rear bumper so that your exhaust is better integrated.

Don't go with the bolt holes. I hate it, it looks just aweful and looks like an afterthought. A clean 5 spoke, nothing more. It'll look clean, simple and elegant all at once without over doing it. It looks like you actually have taste.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you very much for the detailed explanation and examples. Both expressions (looks like it was just slapped on & afterthought)seem perfect to me. I use "afterthought" as a translation of 後付け感 this time because it better suits the whole context. again, thank you so much! "
