Italian term

patagi

Italian to English Other Religion Japanese Buddhism
This is a thesis about Japanese/Chinese religion. I can't find anything on the internet!

"Si ha anche da sapere che importa tanto il sapere e il procedere ciascuno conforme alla propria dignità nei patagi e nel modo di agire, che il voler elevarsi, mostrando più gravità di che conviene, diventa invece disonore; e il voler far meno, per usare umiltà, deprime e fa cadere in disprezzo insieme la persona e la religione."

Hope someone can help. Thanks :-)

Discussion

Helen Pringle (asker) Mar 14, 2016:
Yes, the only instance. I have also found "katagi". Now, the 2 strange terms are quoted in passages from other sources - so I will ask my customer to sort them out for me. Thanks again for your help :-)
philgoddard Mar 14, 2016:
Is it the only instance in the entire text?
Helen Pringle (asker) Mar 14, 2016:
It doesn't seem likely that the monks would be flying around with these "patagi" on them - but you never know. I will see if the author has any ideas :-) Thanks for your research Phil.
philgoddard Mar 14, 2016:
This is what it means in Italian, though it doesn't make sense here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patagium
Or it could be a typo, or a Japanese word.

patags / patangs

It is a Bhutanese sword.

Patag (or patang) symbolises authority and
recognition of high honour and is therefore highly regarded
and valued.
