I confused about which part of the phrasing "luce" refers to. I do not understand its usage here either.

luskie is of course absolutely right on meaning - this could be an alternative, more concise phrasing

: but a gauge is a diameter, isn't it? I ruled it out as 3x3 is not a circular measure
