i.r. ingegnere circolare

I'm translating an article about a number of historic buildings in the Trentino dating from the beginning of the 19th century. This mentions a number of times a certain Giuseppe Maria Ducati, who is given the title of "i.r. ingegnere circolare". Can anyone help me with the meaning of "i.r." and "circolare" in this context? Many thanks.

You're quite right. Sorry, the dastardly automatic corrector in action again... I meant to write "imperio", not "imperiale :-). You could be right about "circolare", at http://www.agiati.it/UploadDocs/5150_art02_franchini.pdf it's been translated as "di circoscrizione" and at http://www.museoscuolapergine.it/it/storia/ as "Circolo distrettuale", so I suppose I could translate it as "district engineer".

Are you sure about "imperial regio"? It doesn't look very Italian to me.
I'm wondering whether "circolare" could mean "district".

Thanks to you so far, but I've actually just found the meaning of i.r., which should be "imperial regio", translated as Imperial and Royal (I&R) in English. But I'm still at sea for "circolare".
