achisholm (asker) Dec 18, 2005:
Yes, exactly. It's for nitrating aromatic rings. In the past, I always jut referred to it as "nitration mix" since I think the ingredients are almost always this (equal columes of conc. HNO3 and H2SO4).
Zareh Darakjian Ph.D. Dec 18, 2005:
Hi Alexander: Is this for the nitration of aromatic / benzene rings?

a nitric acid-sulfuric acid mixture.

This is one way it's usually expressed. There is no fixed scientific term for this.
You could also say a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acid.

The release of the second edition of the book details instructions that do without the use of nitric acid. In the procedure is detailed a method which uses a mixture of sulfuric acid and potassium nitrate to create the needed ** nitric and sulfuric acid mixture. **

I actually prefer ** nitric and sulfuric acid mixture ** vis-a-vis nitric acid - sulfuric acid mixture. I would not, however, use nitration mix. I don't think this is a standard scientific term. I have never heard it or read it anywhere in any of the textbooks I have used during the last 25 years...

agree Will Matter : "Nitrosulfuric acid" is one part nitric and two parts sulfuric, by weight.

neutral Will Matter : Yes, it is except that it's basically a copy of the answer above. Also, capital letters are perceived as "SCREAMING", which is unnecessary.
