Hungarian term

vadregényes

Hungarian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
A "vadregényes" szónak keresném - ha van - az angol megfelelőjét. Igazából, már azzal bajban vagyok, ha el akarom magyarázni, mi is az, hogy vadregényes. Pontos definíció nélkül elég szubjektív, hogy kinek mi számít vadregényesnek.

Vadregényes tájról lenne szó a kérdésben.

agree Katalin Horváth McClure : Amit magyarul a "vadregényes táj" kifejezéssel írnak le, azt angolul leginkább a "romantic" (scenery/landscape) írja le.

adventurous

Számomra a vadregényes leginkább kalandosat jelent.

An adventurous place, land or country.

"This exotic, adventurous scenery complements the plot of the tragedy and Euripides' own emphasis on barbaric practices."

vadregényes táj -> adventurous scenery

The massive walls of Artemis' temple dominate a sandy beach whose golden color blends with the light blue of the dawn sky which achieves warmer tones as the day progresses. The gentle sound of waves against a shore breaks the initial silence in the theater. This exotic, adventurous scenery complements the plot of the tragedy and Euripides' own emphasis on barbaric practices.

wild and romantic

A "romantic" valóban jó megközelítés, de egy táj sokféleképpen lehet romatikus, ebben a kifejezésben talán pontosabban benne van az eredeti kifejezés íze.
Example sentence:

Hotel Description: In the midst of a wild and romantic landscape, the Percy Arms Hotel stands on the edge of the Northumberland Moors. It offers luxury and comfort in a genuine 'get away from it all' location.

Peer comment(s):

agree Elevenít (X) : The 'wild' is definitely needed here as 'romantic' on its own really is subject to the vagaries of personal taste

sublime

If we are talking about art appreciation and particularly that relating to the 1800 to 1900s the 'romantic landscape' does describe the artistic temperament at that time.

However, this is to simply describe the landscape rather than an art movement, so I would suggest that other terms be considered.

Current usage and images brought to mind are somewhat different, though. 'Wildly romantic landscape' would capture the expression well enough, though a 'romantic landscape' wouldn't. What after all is a romantic landscape? In the 18th and 19th centuries it would be a wild untamed Valkyrie mountain scene of forests and rivulets. These days it's probably sandy beaches in Barbados that come to mind. So the 'wild' should at least be suggested.

Suggesting 'sublime' is an attempt to capture the emotive impact of the landscape on the viewer.

Another possible term, though skewed towards a more pastoral scene, would be to translate it as 'idyllic', though this has little emotional force.

Compare the images suggested by Google for these phrases 'vadregényes táj' and 'sublime landscape' and you will see they more closely match than the images brought to mind by 'romantic landscape' - though 'wildly romantic landscape' gets closer. More importantly, the images suggested by 'romantic landscape' are largely paintings from 1900 rather than real landscapes.

'Majestic' could also be a possibility.
Example sentence:

"The sublime landscape was a romanticized one in which craggy mountains, high waterfalls, and wide open spaces were featured."

"Terror is also an emotion of the sublime landscape of immense waterfalls. cragged rocks. steep banks. and broken ruins..."
