German term

fahrtdrahtlos

German to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping Traction energy storage
This is a report on a device for storing traction energy for a vehicle (presumably a tram of some kind):

Der Energiespeicher wird über einen Gleichstromsteller direkt in den Zwischenkreis im Fahrzeug eingebunden. Er kann zur Rückgewinnung der Bremsenergie, zur Senkung der Spitzenleistung (Spitzenstrom) im speisenden Netz oder als alleinige Energiequelle für das Fahren in **fahrtdrahtlosen** Streckenabschnitten genutzt werden. Eine Aufladung kann z. B. in Haltestellen erfolgen.

I can't find any translation for this term, or for Fahrtdraht for that matter, but imagine it's some kind of catenary wire. Does anyone know what these are called?

Many thanks

I saw such a trial run in Nice Two years ago, and even shot a few seconds of video
Oliver Walter Oct 14, 2010:
Not so important I think in this case it doesn't matter really whether you call it overhead wire, catenary wire or contact wire - it only needs to be clear what is absent on those stretches of track where the vehicle can't obtain power from overhead, so has to use its stored energy. (P.S. "Fahrdraht" was so obvious to me, I didn't initially notice that you actually wrote "Fahrtdraht"!)
meirs Oct 14, 2010:
Oberleiter Is the railroad term for the contact wire as far as I know
Claire Cox (asker) Oct 14, 2010:
Ah, that explains why I couldn't find it! It isn't even every easy to pronounce with the extra t - I should have thought of checking without....
Cilian O'Tuama Oct 14, 2010:
Fahrdraht seems to be the correct spelling, without the first T

I actually deleted the "los" and capitalised it in my entry template, but it seems to be visble to me only.

Used frequently for trams/trolley busses that have the ability to drive without power for a limited period. Either to switch track, overtake or in sensitive conservation areas where overhead cables are not allowed.

without line voltage

Die Straßenbahn benötigt keine Netzspannung, da sie die Energie aus dem Speicher nehmen kann. Der Fahrdraht ist natürlich weiter vorhanden.
