Freigabeaktion

German to English Other Ships, Sailing, Maritime
"Die Mittel für den Erwerb der Schiffe hatten wir zum Teil durch die Überschüsse in der Firma erworben, zum Teil aber erhielten wir sie aus Amerika durch die sogenannte Freigabeaktion."

German ships had been seized during World War I and were being regulated by the Shipping Board. A Mr Kiesselbach in the United States had introduced some form of compensatory action for the steamships lost during the war but I cannot seem to find a specific word for "Freigabeaktion". Would it be something like "deregulation" or perhaps "liberalisation". I am looking for a word in BE and the article in question is the history of a shipping company.

Freigabegesetz You are right, M00nshine. Freigabeaktion does indeed refer to the Settlement of War Claims Act. See reference comment and links.

In this case a German merchant ship had been seized during the war and following the war was evaluated and a series of monies paid to the shipping company in question for loss of its ship. I think the ship still existed and was not simply handed back but it was the value of the ship that was paid. Such things were regulated by the Shipping Board.

I would say: compensation or reparation agreemen, although it seems a little strange that this should have been paid by the Americans to the Germans.

I can't find any references - we need Kim for that - but there was a War Fund for the financing of lost/destroyed ships. There was nothing "generous" about it - otherwise, the US would have had to finance the entire country.

"Settlement Claim"

It certainly doesn't mean "grant" or "waiver".
(Freigabe often is translated "release" or "settlement". Here it is safer to use the broader term, "settlement".)
(This may be a court lawsuit, or a claim before a special commission.)

The first measure was to commandeer the German and Austrian vessels interned in American ports since the outbreak of World War I in 1914. Customs officials seized the 97 vessels on 6 April 1917. The day of the declaration of war, but some of the German crews still managed to damage the ships. All the enemy ships were welcome, and in tonnage they vastly exceeded the prewar U.S.-flag foreign trade fleet; particularly valuable were the passenger liners, including the Vaterland, renamed the Leviathan, the second largest ship then afloat in the world. By midsummer 1917, the German ships were repaired and put back in service under the U.S. flag, a task complicated by the location of many of these ships in overseas possessions ranging from Puerto Rico to the distant Philippines and Samoa.

Thank you Kim, I had found this article too and I think the "Freigabeaktion" takes place after 1927, possibly in 1928 -29 and must refer to some easing of the law in support of the original foreign owners. I am unable to find anything on this period though apart from the above-mentioned "Settlement of War Claims Act" in 1928.
