German term

ausleiten

German to English Medical Knee Endoprosthesis Surgery; Wound Closure
"Ein bis zwei Redondrainagen werden platziert und durch das seitliche Retinaculum ausgeleitet."

The next sentence in the paragraph on wound closure, the final paragraph in my knee endoprosthesis insertion text.

To my astonishment, I can't find the verb "ausleiten" anywhere. I did find a previous KudoZ question about it, but that didn't really help me much.

Would it just be "guided out" or something? BTW, Redondrainage is Redon drainage and the seitliches Retinaculum is the lateral retinaculum (whatever that is). TIA for your help.

drain off

One to two redon drainages are placed, with the fluid being drained off/extracted through the lateral retinaculum

There is only one hole/opening/insertion involved here (per drainage, that is), and the fluid is sucked out(negative pressure)through a plastic tube into a container. This container(a plastic bottle) is located at the lateral retinaculum.

The link below describes a TKR in detail. You should have a look, it includes many intriguing terms('housemaid's knee plane')that might come in handy in the course of your project.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Fred was the first to mention "drain off", but Johanna has made a much more convincing case for it, so I'm awarding her the points. But thank you all for your contributions - some very interesting suggestions. "Drain off" seems best though. This is my last question on the knee job (thank goodness!). Good to finish on a high note with an answer that convinced me beyond doubt and that I can give the maximum 4 to! But thanks to everyone who helped me with my various questions on this job. Hopefully I won't have to ask quite so many for the next one!"

led out, passed out

i.e. the path that the drainage tube takes to leave the body. The surgeon has to make the appropriate hole first.
