Please read the following explanation about \"women-years\". It explains why it is used in plural:
\"For example in older users, the failure rate may be as low as 3 per hundred women years (this means that if 100 women used the method for a year, 3 would become pregnant.) This compares to a failure rate for the pill (when used correctly) of about one in a hundred. But in younger women the failure rate with the diaphragm may be around 10-15 per hundred women years because, for example, these women may not put the diaphragm in properly or every time, or may forget to use the spermicides.\"
