German term

sinnvollerweise

Non-PRO German to English Tech/Engineering Mathematics & Statistics
context: inferential statistics
"Die Messungen werden sinnvollerweise an Stichproben durchgeführt und nicht an allen Einzelwerten der sogenannten Grundgesamtheit (bzw. des Kollektives); denn erst alle möglichen Stichproben zusammen bilden diese Grundgesamtheit."

It is too costly, too time consuming, and too cumbersome to obtain information from the entire population, therefore decisions on the characteristics of the population must be based on information contained in a sample of that population, and of couse all possible samples of the population together make up the total population.
But I am having trouble summing that up in a one-word or short-phrase equivalent for sinnvollerweise. Any help greatly appreciated!
Change log

Jan 13, 2014 11:46: Steffen Walter changed "Field (specific)" from "(none)" to "Mathematics & Statistics"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (1): Steffen Walter

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

It makes sense to

It makes sense to measure samples instead of measuring all individuals in the collective, since the collective consists of the totality of all possible samples that could be taken from it.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to everyone for your help again. Although I found all of the answers helpful, Sigrid's sentence was perfectly rendered and, I believe, conveys the meaning of the original succintly without getting bogged down in the whys and wherefores (like I did) - thanks very much!"
