Judging from the ghits, 'transillumination' is very common usage in the medical context and equally rare outside of this context.

In principle, it wouldn't have to be visible light if the inspection is performed using some sort of imaging detector (e.g. infrared light, since some materials that are opaque to visible light are translucent to infrared, and infrared imaging sensors are commonly available).
