Actually The confusion was not regarding the construction, although "erhalten" has several different meanings. Really, I had wanted to ask about the entire sentence (i.e., ultimately, what the sentence was getting at), but knew I couldn't do that as I would be violating Kudoz rules for asking a whole sentence or more than 4 words or whatever the rule is these days, inevitably raining fire and brimstone down on myself from numerous circles. I still believe the sentence to be awkwardly worded and I've never seen it written like this.

I also don't appreciate all kinds of snap judgments being made about my asking and really do not understand what entitlement you envision yourself as having. I also tend to believe that many people would like to ask questions, but are afraid of getting all kinds of caustic notes. So they don't.

No Ron,I was pulled away from work (ie translation, research, etc.)not knowing it was an 'unimportant' question. the question was important to your work of course, but it's one you could have easily solved yourself. I think that's the point being made. :-

note The entire sentence is so horribly written that it certainly doesn't beg the question why anyone would have a problem understanding it. I think "input" is very helpful.
