German term
Patron
German to English
Bus/Financial
Finance (general)
What is the proper English term for the "benefactor" who is to provide the financial backing specified in a letter of comfort? In the text I'm looking at, the benefactor is not the parent company of a subsidiary, so I can't use "parent company".
Proposed translations
(English)
4 | Guarantor | DC Josephs |
3 | issuer of a letter of comfort/support | Ken Cox |
2 | letter of support | Jonathan MacKerron |

Guarantor
Zahn Bank- und Börsenwesen offers "guarantor" for "Patronatsgeberin" and "Patronin" (I guess they're assuming that the guarantor is a company). This seems to meet your context (btw, the more context you put in your question, the more likely you are to get an answer :-)

Langenscheidt proposes "founder", perhaps it simply means "owner, proprietor" or such like here??

Thanks, but I was really interested in the "Patron" part of the sentence. |

issuer of a letter of comfort/support
A Patronatserklärung is apparently very specific to German law, as you probably already know. Schäfer provides a fairly extensive explanation of the term, and gives 'issuer of a letter of comfort' as the translation of 'Patron'.
